The Business Cares Food Drive announced donations totalling 281,000 lbs of food to help support those in need in our community. This total represents an 8% increase in donations and comes at an important time as the need continues to grow. Thank you to all members of the Western community who helped promote and support this initiative on campus.
Western's record setting football kicker Lirim Hajruallahu helped kick-off the community-wide Business Cares Food Drive for 2013 on November 29 at London Hall. With the support of Business Cares Food Drive Chair, Wayne Dunn, Lirim showed his kicking prowess by setting the record for the longest kick off in Canadian Food Drive history through uprights constructed of donated can goods. While the launch was light hearted the underlying need for campus community support of Western Cares Food Drive is more important than ever.
The London and Area Food Bank supports over 3,600 people with emergency food on a monthly basis. Last year the Business Cares Food Drive contributed over 256, 000 lb of food during the December campaign. This year the food bank has had a 19% increase in demand for support, meaning your support is critically important.
In addition to those who support the campaign with their donations a big word of thanks goes to the Building Captains around campus who promote the food drive in their areas. A tip of the hat also to Hospitality Services who arranged with their suppliers donations to help to kick off the campaign at Western on Nov. 29.
