Keynote/Panel Discussion Speaker Bios

Keynote #1 - Technology, Innovation & Health:  Connections, Caveats & Considerations

Bruce Woods, BHSc, MBA

Bruce completed his Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences at the University of Toronto in 1974 and his Master’s in Business Administration degree at Western University in 1979. He is currently in the process of completing his practicum (working with Dr. Robert Petrella) for a Masters in Public Health degree at Walden University in the United States. He is the President of SYKES Assistance Services Corporation (SASC) which has its head office in London, Ontario. SASC has approximately 1000 employees including over 300 registered nurses and social workers who provide telephone-based triage, self-help, and smoking cessation services on behalf of health ministries in Ontario, British Columbia, and New Brunswick. Bruce’s primary interest is to improve the Canadian public’s access to cost effective chronic disease management support services through a combination of 24 by 7 telephony, poly-chronic care networks, virtual health risk assessments, remote monitoring, and active patient e-learning strategies to improve upon their engagement in their own personal health.

Jeff Nisker, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FCAHS

Jeff is a Professor of Obstetrics-Gynaecology at the Schulich School Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, and Scientist, Children’s Health Research Institute. He holds, and has held, CIHR and Genome Canada grants to explore ethical and social issues in reproductive medicine, genetics, and exposure of pregnant women to environmental toxins. He has held a CIHR/Health Canada grant exploring public engagement for citizen deliberation regarding pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. Jeff has written or co-written over 150 scientific articles and book chapters, as well as seven plays. His plays have been performed throughout Canada, as well as in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa.

Keynote #2 - The Future of Technology, Innovation & Health

Jan Polgar, PhD, OT, Reg. (Ont), FCAOT 

Jan is the Associate Dean Academic (Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs) for the Faculty of Health Sciences, Western University.  She is also an associate professor in the School of Occupational Therapy. She has led, co-led and participated in many different research projects involving different aspects of assistive technology, with a focus in mobility related technology. Her work focuses on seating and wheelchair technology as well as vehicular technology that supports safe transportation of older adults and adults with disabilities. Her work includes evaluation of the functional outcome of assistive technology use, the meaning of assistive technology use and the evaluation of the usability of emerging technology by older adults (primarily vehicular technology).

Panel Discussion - Innovations and Their Importance to Health

Shannon McGuire, BHSc(PT)

Shannon McGuire is a physiotherapist who has been practicing for 15 years and has been working at Parkwood Hospital since 2005.  She currently works in the Outpatient Acquired Brain Injury Program but has experience with the Outpatient Spinal Cord Injury population as well.  Shannon is an Associate Professor with the School of Physiotherapy at Western University.  She was instrumental in bringing the Body Weight Support Treadmill to Parkwood and after attending a NeuroRecovery Network Locomotor Training Course at Kessler Rehabilitation Hospital in New Jersey began to develop a similar program at here in London.  The Locomotor Training Program at Parkwood Hospital was started in March 2012 for survivors of a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury.

Anne Snowdon, BScN, MSc, PhD

Anne Snowdon is Chair of the International Centre for Health Innovation at the Richard Ivey School of Business, an Adjunct Faculty member at Ivey and holds an Adjunct appointment in the School of Nursing at McGill University in Montreal. She is also a Professor at the Odette School of Business and is cross-appointed to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Windsor.  Anne holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western University, a Master of Science from McGill University and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Michigan. She is a Fulbright Scholar and was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowship for research on parenting during childhood hospitalization. She is also the Theme Coordinator for Automotive Health and Safety for Canada’s automotive research program, AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence, and has commercialized innovative new safety seat products for occupants in vehicles as a result of this research program. In addition to her expertise in health system leadership and innovation, Her research also looks at the role of engaged consumers as agents of change and reform to health systems.

Xianbin Wang, PhD, PEng, SMIEEE 

Xianbin Wang is a professor at Western University and a Canada Research Chair in Wireless Communications. His research interests are focused on wireless communications and related applications, including adaptive and cognitive communications systems, wireless security, cross-layer design, and e-health. He has more than 150 journal and refereed conference publications, 23 granted and pending patents, and several standard contributions on various communication system design issues.  Xianbin is a Senior Member and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE. He was the recipient of three IEEE Best Paper Awards. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for three IEEE Journals. Dr. Wang was involved in a number of international conferences including GLOBECOM, ICC, WCNC, VTC, and ICME, on different roles such as TPC Co-Chair, Symposium Chair, Track Chair and Session Chair.

Penny Welch-West, MClSc, SLP, (C) Reg. CASLPO

Penny Welch-West, trained at Western University for both Hon. BA (Psychology, Linguistics) and Master's in Communicative Disorders.  She has a concurrent education Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language.  She is presently working as a Speech-Language Pathologist with St. Joseph's Health Care, Parkwood Hospital site in the Complex & Continuing Care and Acquired Brain Injury Programs (Inpatient and Outpatient services).  Penny is co-author of the Dysphagia and Cognitive-Communication Chapters of the Evidence Based Review of Acquired Brain Injury (ERABI) work with Dr. Teasell and team.  Penny is a SMARTBoard and technology enthusiast.

Dalton Wolfe, PhD

Dalton Wolfe is a Scientist in Aging, Rehabilitation and Geriatric Care (Lawson) and is also affiliated with Western University through the School of Health Studies and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (Faculty of Health Sciences) as well as the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Schulich).  He leads the Spinal Cord Injury Research Group at Lawson and his primary research interest is in the area of knowledge mobilization and best practice adoption within rehabilitation and community settings especially as this is enabled through technology.  Other areas of interest include physical activity, locomotor training and secondary health conditions commonly encountered by those with SCI.
