Welcome to Modern Languages and Literatures, Graduate Program...
At the University of Western Ontario, the undergraduate and graduate programs in Hispanic Studies are housed in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. The working language of the Hispanic Studies graduate program is Spanish.
Given the varied background of the faculty members teaching in the Hispanic Studies graduate program, and also the availability of cross disciplinary studies (including Comparative Literature, Visual Arts, Women's Studies, Critical Theory), students will enjoy an intellectually exciting time at Western.
Here's what some students have to say:
“To pursue Hispanic Studies at UWO is to be part of one of the most culturally diverse and intellectually stimulating departments on campus. One advantage is the unique opportunity it offers to students to learn extensively about topics surrounding Latin American literature, theatre, language, and philosophy. Fully exposing students to Hispanic cultures, as seen through the eyes and experiences of fellow colleagues and esteemed professors, greatly enhances this learning experience. The Masters and PhD programs provide students with the necessary tools and confidence to become effective instructors while at the same time pursuing their academic interests. Overall, the free flow of ideas, level of academic scholarship, and international atmosphere it fosters made completing a Masters Degree in the Hispanic Studies Department a truly enriching experience.”
"One of the advantages of studying at the Hispanic Studies Graduate program at Western is that we can experience the academic world from the students’ perspective and also by assuming the role of professors. Due to the fact that, we, as students, are in charge of teaching a Spanish language course, and some of us also have the chance of teaching a course related within our area of specialization once you finish the program, either Masters or Ph D, you get not only the formal knowledge that the program offers but also the experience to teach and do research. Our professors are always available to us and they are at all times open to provide us with feedback and more ideas to make our professional development meaningful. My experience as a Ph. D. Student at Western has given me the tools to accomplish a solid research record and to attain strong teaching skills. This is the perfect program where you can study, learn, have fun, and also have the chance of working with very experienced professionals in the Hispanic Studies field."
"The PhD in Hispanic Studies at Western has been a very positive experience for me. The professors I have worked with are not only extremely capable and intelligent but also open to new ideas and encouraging of their students' pursuits. I continue to learn a lot from them, not only about Hispanic Studies but also about being an instructor and an academic. The department is friendly, positive and cooperative, which has made it a great place to spend my PhD years.”
