Objectives for a Language Placement Test

, you should not take the test, if you are a true beginner, that is a student
who has no knowledge whatsoever of the language you wish to study. Please enroll directly into the 1000 level language course.
, you should not take the test, if you have completed the language you
wish to study in high school (Grade 12 U). Then please enroll directly into the 2000 level language course.
, you should not take the test, if you have successfully completed a language
course at Western. In this case, you may enroll directly in a higher-level course in that language.
,you should take the placement test, if none of the statements above are true for you.
An assessment is required if you are not a true beginner or did not complete a language course in high school
or at Western. Self-placement is not permitted.
Why is a placement test so important?
The test is designed to assess your skills and background
in such a way that you can enroll in a
course that really allows you to improve your competence. You would not want to be in a course that is too easy
for you, so that you would not learn much, or in one that is too difficult, so that you would feel overwhelmed.
What is the best way to answer the placement test questions?
Please answer the questions honestly, without preparation and to the best of your knowledge,
because the best placement will maximize your chances of taking the course that will most benefit you.
Try to answer all questions, unless you do not know the answer. Do not use any help, for example from friends or
from resources like dictionaries. The nature of the test and the time the test takes varies with the language,
but averages around 20-30 minutes. Each placement test can only be submitted once, but there is no time limit
to completing the test. Misrepresenting your abilities will be considered a violation of the Code of Student Conduct.
The Department reserves the right to transfer a student out of a
course, if it is deemed that the student does not
have the appropriate level of language for the course.
What will happen with my results?
In order to take the test, you will need to enter your name, student number, faculty, and year of
registration. When you complete the test, please email the requested
information to the Department of Modern Languages and
, so that you can be contacted with a recommendation as to the course you should enroll in.
All special permissions will be given at that time. There is no due date for this assessment, but processing
time may vary depending on the time in the academic year.
