Scholarships & Awards

The following list of scholarships and awards are specific to students enrolled in Modern Languages and Literatures courses.For a full listing of opportunities available to all Arts and Humanities students, please visit our Academic Counselling website.

A. Dorothy Turville Gold Medal (French & MLL) 

Awarded to a student in an Honors Bachelor degree graduating with a double Major in French and Spanish. Gold Medal & $500 (awarded in Spring) 


A. Dorothy Turville Undergraduate Language Travelling Fellowships (French & MLL) 


Alfred Edward Hathaway Petrie Scholarship 

Awarded annually to the full-time undergraduate student who has achieved the highest standing in first-year Spanish and who is registered to continue in an Honors Specialization, Specialization or major in Spanish. Students whose first language is Spanish are not eligible. Final selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarship Committee. $750 German Exchange Travelling Fellowship 

Awarded to full-time Western students selected to participate in an official UWO exchange program to Germany. The number and awards will be determined annually. Awards will be made up to a max of 10 students. Exchange office notifies in Spring. Harriet Beatrice Freele Scholarship (also French) Awarded to an outstanding student (minimum average 80%) entering the third year of either an Honors Specialization or Major offered by the Departments of French or Modern Languages and Literatures. $1,000 


Edna Jeffery Scholarships (also Philosophy & Others [non-Arts and Humanities]) 


Gordon Tracy Award for Excellence in German Literature 

Awarded to a graduating student registered in an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in German who attains the highest average in all German literature courses taken. $500 (awarded in Spring)

Gold Medal in Comparative Literature and Culture


Herbert K. Kalbfleisch Scholarship 

Awarded to a full-time student whose first language is not German, entering third or fourth year of a Four Year Bachelor degree program which includes an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in German. $2,000 (awarded in Fall) 


John D. Schussler Travelling Award 

Awarded to a student participating in an exchange program in Germany. Preference to a student in Arts and Humanities. $500


Raymond Immerwahr Awards for Excellence in German 

Awarded to students entering the third or the fourth year of an Honors Bachelor degree with either an Honors Specialization in German Language and Literature or a double Major including German who achieve the highest average marks (80% minimum) in two senior German courses. $1,800 (awarded in Fall) Italian Studies Prizes

Awarded annually to the highest-ranking students in Italian Studies (min. 80% average), with preference given to those pursuing a Minor in Italian Studies. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures will select the recipients each Spring. 4 @ $500 


Renata Purekevich Scholarship 

Awarded to a student with the highest marks in German 1030, 1030w/x, 2200 or German 2200w/x who is entering the second year of a Four Year degree program which includes an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in German. $200 (awarded in Fall) 


Dr. R.N. Shervill Gold Medal 

Awarded annually to the graduating student who has achieved the highest academic average in an Honors Specialization in Spanish Language and Literature. Gold Medal & $500 (awarded in Spring) 


Special German Scholarship 

Awarded to a student with the highest mark in German 2200 or 2200W/X who is entering the second year of a Four Year degree program which includes an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in German. $800 


Wilfred and Zeta O’Donnell Travelling Fellowship (also Classics and French)
