WE'RE JAZZED ABOUT THIS MONTH!

February's featured artist is jazz bassist Rodney Whitaker, who will join the Western University Jazz Ensemble (Feb. 8), and perform along side a Jazz Combo (Feb. 9) during the Fridays at 12:30 concert series. He will be in residence at Western from February 6-9. Rodney Whitaker is one of the world’s finest double bass performers, educators, mentors and is dedicated to developing, inspiring, and growing the next generation of jazz musicians, mentors, and pedagogues.

Opera-lovers have several options this month to choose from:

  • Canadian Opera Company's Jane Archibald, soprano, and Head of the COC's Opera Studio Liz Upchurch, piano, return to Western to perform in the "Fridays" series.
  • Baritone Jeremy Huw Williams and Ensemble Paramirabo will be visiting the Faculty for a three-day residency from Feb. 5-7, 2024. The central event of their visit will be a concert featuring two chamber operas by Welsh composer Claire Victoria Roberts and faculty member Paul Frehner. The program will also include Claude Vivier's seminal work Paramirabo. Learn more
  • And of course, the annual student Opera and Musical Theatre Gala takes place on Feb. 3. An inspiring afternoon of favourite operatic and musical theatre excerpts from the earliest periods of operatic composition to the present time of opera and musical theatre. Portions of the performance will be accompanied by Western’s Early Music Studio. Purchase tickets in advance from the Opera at Western webpage.

Piano faculty member Brett Kingsbury gives a solo piano recital featuring The Jack Pine by Jocelyn Morlock, Beethoven's Eroica Variations, R. Schumann's Humoreske, Scriabin's Poemes Op. 32, and Debussy's L'isle Joyeuse.

Mid-term season is here again, which means all large ensembles are in action before the students head out and classes and concerts are paused for Reading Week. Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band share a concert on Feb. 10; Choirs at Western features a lunch-time series this month with one choir performing daily Feb. 13-15; and the Symphony Orchestra performs on Feb. 15 (rescheduled) on Friday, Feb. 16 for one more lunch-time concert before Reading Week.
