BRING ON THE STUDENTS!

As mid-terms approach, October brings the first student performances of the year - from choirs to instrumental ensembles - as well as premieres of works written by our talented student composers. The Symphony Orchestra closes out the month with a spooky Halloween-themed concert.

The Fridays at 12:30 concert series features a mix of guest artist, student, and faculty performers, including a chamber music recital featuring acclaimed mezzo-soprano of Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations with English, Irish and Scottish heritage, Marion Newman-Nege’ga.

A special event with research-inspired music takes place near the end of the month: jointly presented by Western Music and The Western Academy for Advanced Research's Climate Resilient Infrastructure and Buildings team, this event combines a concert with a discussion of the increasing natural disasters coming from climate change and what we can do to adapt to our changing reality. Music will be performed by Les Choristes and Western University Singers and others. Tempo: Music for Climate Action is a multinational coalition of physical and social scientists and musicians to change the emotional climate about climate change.

On October 27-28, we're honoured to welcome internationally renowned pianist Yekwon Sunwoo as this year's Parsons and Poole Concert and Masterclass distinguished guest artist. Gold medallist of the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Yekwon Sunwoo has been hailed for his “unfailingly consistent excellence” (International Piano) and celebrated as “a pianist who commands a comprehensive technical arsenal that allows him to thunder without breaking a sweat” (Chicago Tribune). Proceeds from this annual event support the endowment created more than a decade ago by alumni to honour piano duo Margaret Parsons and Clifford Poole, and bring world-class musicianship to Western. Visit the Parsons and Poole Concert and Masterclass page to purchase concert tickets in advance and learn more about the masterclass.

Behind the Events

Students are fully in the swing of things by October and first performances come up quickly. Usually there are also a few studio recitals before students head home for Fall Reading Week at the very end of the month.

Our first of a series of special instrument days and open houses take place this month. Flute players and enthusiasts can join us on campus for Flute Day, featuring Canadian-born flutist Susan Hoeppner who is highly regarded for her deeply lyrical phrasing, dazzling virtuosity and a “no holds barred” approach in her performances. She is an established international soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, with appearances that include numerous venues spanning the continents of North America, South America, throughout Europe, Japan and China.

Have you bought your opera ticket for next month's production of Gioachino Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella)? We expect this popular family-favourite to sell quickly. Book via the Opera at Western page.
