Funding

All students admitted to the Program will receive full funding for each of the two years as part of the normal process for funding graduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.  The basic funding package will be comprised of the following:

  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)
  • Western Graduate Research Scholarship (WGRS)
  • Any additional funds mandated by the Collective Agreement between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union.

Exceptional applicants may be offered, in addition, one of the following Entrance Scholarships: Provost Entrance Scholarship ($4000); Dean's Entrance Scholarship ($2000); Chair's Entrance Scholarship ($1000). Decisions about entrance scholarships are made by the Program Committee and the Graduate Chairs of the two constituent Departments. In addition, students may apply for the Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Masters Scholarship available from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council.

Funding eligibility: for admission to the program students must have a minimum B+ average (78%) in their last two years or ten half courses. For continued funding and enrollment in the program students must maintain good academic standing.

Western provides the best student experience among Canada's leading research-intensive universities.
