Crime Prevention through Environmental Design
This program was initiated at Western by the Women’s Safety Committee and Campus Police. Western is the only Canadian university to have a dedicated CPTED position. The goal of the program is to initiate and support improvements to personal safety and protection of property. Prior to security enhancements at any faculty or department, a CPTED review is undertaken by our CPTED/Safety Coordinator. To date, we have conducted over 325 safety/security reviews. The reviews included providing better security for storage areas housing specialized equipment and controlled goods, personal security enhancements, perimeter security, card access and the installation of video monitoring equipment. It should be noted that the Campus Community Police Service is the only agency on campus mandated to monitor the over 600 cameras currently in operation. As such we follow very strict video monitoring guidelines as set out in Western's video monitoring policy, http://www.uwo.ca/univsec/pdf/policies_procedures/section1/mapp142.pdf
The CPTED position has expanded to include processing requests relating to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The CPTED coordinator is also responsible for maintaining the Emergency Response Trailer and ensuring all hold up alarms on campus are functioning properly.
