Scholarships and Awards

Various scholarships and awards are available for prospective and current undergraduate and graduate students supervised by CPSX faculty. CPSX is proud to offer Interdisciplinary Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarships. In addition, Western’s planetary science graduate program attracts top calibre students, who hold numerous major scholarships, including Trillium, NSERC, and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships.

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program is jointly funded between the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and matched funding through donations to The University of Western Ontario. The Ontario Graduate Scholarships are designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels.

Value and Duration

  • $10,000 to $15,000
  • 3 consecutive terms (one year)

Application Deadline

  • Application opens October 1st, 2015
  • Final Submission Deadline January 29th, 2016
  • Results released April 29th, 2016

Eligibility

  • Be a current graduate student, or have submitted an application for admission to a Western graduate program
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident, or a Protected Person
  • If an OGS/QEII-GSST applicant is international student holding a valid Study Permit  as of the OGS/QEII-GSST application deadline, they may be considered for one of eight (8) OGS awards that the MTCU has allowed Western to provide to International Students.

Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master’s Program (CGSM) is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The CGSM Program supports 2,500 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada’s three federal granting agencies.

  • $17,500
  • 3 consecutive terms (one year)

Application Deadline

  • Application opens October 1st, 2015
  • Application Deadline December 1st, 2015
  • Results released April 1st, 2016

Eligibility

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Be enrolled in, or have applied for or will apply for full-time admission to, and eligible graduate program at the master's or doctoral level at a Canadian university with a CGSM allocation.
  • Have completed as of December 31 of the year of application between 0 and 12 months of full-time studies
  • Not have previously held a CGS M
  • Have achieve a minimum 80% GPA (or equivalent) in each of the last two completed years of full-time study
  • Submit no more than one CGS M application per year.

NSERC CGS Doctoral Awards

The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral (PGS D) Program provides financial support to high-calibre students who are engaged in doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these students to fully concentrate on their studies and to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.

  • $35,000/year
  • 2 or 3 years

Application Deadline

  • Application opens early September 
  • Application closes October
  • Results released April 1st, 2016

Eligibility

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Intend to pursue, in the following year, full-time doctoral studies and research in an eligible program in the natural sciences or engineering supported by NSERC.
  • An applicant must have enough time left in the proposed program to be able to hold the award if successful. The determination is measured as of Dec 31st of the year of application
  • Must not have previously taken up an NSERC PGS B, PGS D, CGS D, IPS 2,* or a Vanier CGS; and
  • Must not hold, or have held, a CGS D or Vanier CGS from either CIHR or SSHRC.
  • Have achieve a minimum 80% GPA (or equivalent) in each of the last two completed years of full-time study

Vanier Scholarship Program

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both superior leadership skills and an outstanding record of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health. International and domestic candidates are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

  • Research institution deadline October 1st, 2015
  • Nomination deadline for University November 5th, 2015
  • Results are release April 2016

NSERC USRA Undergraduate Student Research Awards

Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are meant to stimulate undergraduate students interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support.

Value and Duration

  • $4,500 plus organization contribution
