Description:

The CIHR Catalyst Grant program provides seed money, on a short-term basis, to support health research activities which represent a first step towards the pursuit of more comprehensive funding opportunities.

the purpose of this funding opportunity is to further strengthen capacity for unique or original research that has the potential to advance knowledge in tobacco control by allowing investigators with innovative ideas and observations to conduct pilot studies, to perform secondary analysis of data sets or to gather new evidence necessary to determine the viability of research directions or hypotheses. It is expected that this targeted investment will lead to the testing of research methods or hypotheses which have the potential to have an impact on the study of tobacco abuse and nicotine addiction interventions. Within the framework of the overall objectives of the CIHR Catalyst Grant Program, the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are: To create innovative opportunities for the testing of research methods or hypotheses which have the potential to have an impact on the study of tobacco abuse and nicotine addiction interventions To foster the development of excellent, well-grounded research proposals. To develop preliminary field-testing of methods or hypotheses. To develop a foundation or exploratory work for strong rationales for research questions, experiments or methods. To promote research which falls outside of conventional research paradigms

Application Details:

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) will not be considered through this program. For projects of a high risk nature, the potential for great scientific gain should offset the risk of failure. There should be minimal or no overlap with other funded work.

Eligibility requirements specific to this funding opportunity include the following: The research proposal demonstrates basic relevance to tobacco abuse/nicotine addiction/ tobacco control. The research proposal addresses research priorities identified by the Canadian Tobacco Control Research Summit. Proposal avoids duplication of previous research, unless it can be demonstrated that replication is of value. Proposal includes a description of expected outcomes and/or a preliminary dissemination plan Research proposal involves pilot testing of research methods, tools, or hypotheses by a research team in order to strengthen proposals prepared for submission to traditional funding sources. Proposal articulates preliminary plans for development of a full research proposal OR research proposal constitutes a novel idea which falls outside the normal scope of traditional research, either in topic or methodology. Proposal demonstrates that adequate funding is not available from other sources for this purpose.

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS PROGRAM

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures).
