Description:

MITACS ACCELERATE is a national internship program managed by MITACS Inc which connects companies and other organizations with the vast research expertise in Canada?s universities. The intern must be a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow at a Canadian university. The intern will undertake a research project which has the potential to lead to, or supplement, the student?s thesis in the case of a graduate student or to further the PDF?s research program. An intern spends approximately half of his/her time over a four-month period on site with the partner, gaining a better understanding of the research issue in question. The balance of the intern?s time is spent back at the university, further advancing the research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor.

Internship projects are a minimum of 4-months in duration, however, longer, 8-month and 12-month projects can be supported through a double internship proposal (2 internships) or a triple internship proposal (3 internships). Each 4-month internship project receives $15,000 in direct funding, with the partner organization and MITACS each providing $7,500 . Please contact Justin Patton for more information: jpatton8@uwo.ca

Application Details:

Projects can be undertaken in a wide range of areas, including manufacturing, technical innovation, business processes, IT, social sciences and much more, and can involve any university faculty or department. For a four-month internship, the partner contributes $7,500 which is matched by MITACS through the support of federal and provincial funding partners. The intern receives a minimum stipend of $10,000 for the four-month period, with the remaining $5,000 supporting other costs associated with the research.

A preference is given to applicants having a for-profit company partner however, the program is very flexible and any instance where there is a project and a partner, the program should be considered. The ACCELERATE officer will speak directly with the student, the partner and the professor if needed. ACCELERATE have offered to speak with every applicant before the RD&S office signs off so that they can read through the application and provide feedback to ensure that it will eventually be funded. The ACCELERATE application is comprised of three documents: - The proposal completed on the prepared template and submitted electronically. Proposals should be written in plain language but should also include relevant technical detail. - The Memorandum signed by all partners (the intern, academic supervisor, partner supervisor and a representative from the Office of Research Services). - A current C.V. of the proposed intern The contact information for Alexandra Reid, the program officer at MITACS/ACCELERATE: areid@mitacs.ca
