The Graduate studentship award provides a salary for graduate students to work on a research project with clear relevance to arthritis. To be eligible for studentship support, students must be engaged in full-time training in research in a Canadian graduate school leading to a Master's or PhD. Students may be supported for up to three years within their first six years of graduate training. Included in the three-year limit is a maximum of two years of support within the first two years of the Master's program. Candidates must have completed sufficient academic work to be admitted in full standing to graduate school by the time the award is to take effect, or be already engaged in a Master's or PhD program.

Training awards for graduate students are available only to those who are engaged in arthritis research and development under the supervision of a CAN investigator. Master's degree candidates are eligible for $18,000 per year including matched funding for a maximum term of two years. PhD candidates are eligible for $21,000 per year including matched funding for a maximum term of three years.

Application Details:

Applications are made by the proposed supervisor, who must be a CAN member. In addition to courses in research methods, the training program must include actual involvement in research. Students enrolled in programs oriented toward clinical training are ineligible for these awards.

All awards to graduate students require matching funds. Although matching funds from NCE eligible partners (industry, institutions, provincial agencies) are preferred, CAN will accept matching funds from operating grants (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, etc.). Download the application forms from the CAN website. You must submit the forms on or before the submission deadline by e-mail to Joanne Wright [jwright3@mtsinai.on.ca] CAN will accept electronic signatures on the forms. If you have transcripts or letters of recommendation in paper format you may mail those documents to Joanne Wright at the Canadian Arthritis Network

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures).
