Description:

The purpose of the annual Metropolis National Research Competition is to select and finance a major national-level policy research project in the field of immigration and diversity. Each year, the National Metropolis Committee votes on an essential research theme on which the call for proposals will be focused. The findings of the research will be of direct relevance to policy-makers within the Government of Canada and, more specifically, to the main funding partners of the Metropolis Project. It is for this purpose that they select a specific research theme that they would like answered.

The standard explanation of the factors that can lead to poverty amongst Canada?s growing visible minority communities, these often being immigrant communities, is usually cited as a combination of country of origin; immigration applicant class; literacy and official language capacity; quality of education; time spent in Canada; foreign credential recognition; access to child care and other gender-related factors; urban/rural factors; access to social capital; inter-generational considerations; and discrimination and racism. This call for research proposals seeks assessments of the adequacy of these standard explanations of poverty and of enduring economic disadvantage amongst growing visible minority communities in Canada.

Application Details:

The Metropolis Project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and a consortium of federal departments and agencies led by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

Applicants should also be aware of the six policy research priority areas defined by the federal agencies that provide funding to the Metropolis Project (i.e., citizenship and social, cultural, and civic integration; economic and labour market integration; family, children and youth; housing and neighbourhoods; justice, policing and security; and welcoming communities: the role of host communities in attracting, integrating and retaining newcomers and minorities).
