The purpose of MIRI grants is to accelerate novel and transformative research that will fundamentally change our understanding of nervous system function and dysfunction and their impact on health. The ultimate goal is to reduce the social and economic burden of neurological and mental health problems by prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.

To take advantage of this Sponsored Opportunity, the Sponsor commits to providing matching funds for a specific research project, and the research team submits applies for funding of the project. By submitting an application, Sponsors commit to contributing in aggregate 50% of the requested project budget (or a lower amount if recommended by the Selection Committee), contingent on the application being considered deserving of funding by the Selection Committee. This amount must be provided in cash to Brain Canada. **Please read the call for proposals for all details regarding sponsor commitments.** It is strongly advised that researchers and Sponsors begin to discuss possible sponsorship of a project as early as possible in the application planning process. Letters of Intent (LOI) may be submitted without a firm commitment from a Sponsor, but should at least be accompanied by letters expressing an interest in supporting the planned research.

Application Details:

This opportunity is open to teams of two or more investigators in any scientific discipline who are eligible to apply for research grants from the Canadian federal granting agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC). One of the team members will be designated Team Leader, and will be the individual responsible for communication with Brain Canada and accountable for the team?s research activities and use of funds. Teams must be multidisciplinary, and their members may be based in one or several research institutions. The team must include the range of expertise and experience required to carry out the proposed research.

The details for submitting a full application will be provided to the Team Leaders of the successful LOIs following the LOI review process. Faculty from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who are applying to this program should be aware that the School will not provide matching funds for these applications.

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
