DAPS Trophy: The IBM - Western University Industry Problem Solving Workshop
DAPS 2013 saw representatives from the City of London, Industry and teams of "Western geniuses".
During reading week, IBM and Western University hosted a four day Industry Problem Solving Workshop on campus.
This Data Analytics Problem Solving (DAPS) event is modeled on the very successful format of the Fields-MITACS Industrial Problem-Solving Workshops. Teams were made up of undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty from a variety of departments, including Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Statistical & Actuarial Science.
Each participating company posed a challenging problem which was assigned to a team on the first day. The teams spend the remainder of the week collaborating on ways to solve the problems and present their findings on the final day of the workshop. By using their combined experience and knowledge, these groups of students utilized the expertise and analytic tools provided by IBM to arrive at innovative and feasible solutions. It does not cost anything to participate and all industry problem solutions strategies will include details of government incentives for hiring students and funding opportunities for the research projects.
