What is a Clicker?

A clicker is a small, portable audience response device used to send feedback responses from an audience member to the presenter. It is one component of an Audience Response System.

You will use your clicker to input your answers and transmit them to the presenter's computer. The responses from the audience will be aggregated together and displayed as a graph on the screen for each question.

Western uses the Turning Technologies ResponseCard NXT device. The ResponseCard NXT has a cellphone-style text-entry numbered keypad for you to answer with letters, numbers, symbols, punctuation, True/False, and short answer responses. The NXT also has a backlit LCD display that indicates when your answers have been received by the presenter's computer.

What is a Virtual Clicker?

A virtual clicker is a mobile app or a website viewed on a mobile device, and is used to take the place of a physical clicker. At Western, we use the term "virtual clickers" to differentiate ResponseWare—a product from Turning Technologies—from physical clickers, such as the ResponseCard RXT device. The ResponseWare website or mobile app simulates the functionality of a physical clicker.

Obtaining a Clicker

Physical Clickers

Your course outline or presenter will indicate whether you require a clicker - not all courses at Western use clickers. If you are unsure, please check with your instructor or presenter.

Western officially supports the ResponseCard NXT devices, which can be purchased at the Bookstore at Western on the lower level of the University Community Centre (the UCC). Currently, used clickers cannot be purchased. Old clickers are no longer supported, so if you currently own one, you must purchase a ResponseCard NXT in order to participate in classes that use clicker technology.

Setting up your Clicker

Physical Clickers

  1. Turn on your clicker
    1. Press any button to wake up your clicker. The clicker sleeps in a power-save mode when you are not using it.
  2. Go to the Toolbox (setup) menu
    1. Press the right option button to open the Toolbox (settings) menu and cycle through the options with the arrow buttons until you see the Your I.D. icon.
    2. Once you see the Your I.D. icon, press the select button.
    3. You will see a screen prompting you to enter your user ID.
  3. Entering your username
    1. Your Western user ID is usually the first part of your Western email address, the part that comes before
    2. Typing on your clicker is similar to a numeric cellphone keypad: find the key containing the small letter that you want to type; press the key in quick succession until the desired letter or number appears on the screen. If you miss the desired character, keep pressing the key until it appears again.
    3. Use the number buttons to enter your username.
  4. Save your settings
    1. When you have finished entering your user ID, press the select button to save. Return to the main screen by pressing the left option button. Your clicker is now set up for use. Your username will be registered in the device until you change it.

Creating a ResponseWare account

  1. Go to
  2. Click "Create one now" below "Don't have a ResponseWare account?"
  3. Do not enter anything into the "Enter License Code" field
  4. Check the checkbox beside "I have not purchased a license, but would still like to create an account."
  5. Enter your Western email address in the next two fields
  6. Enter a new password into the next two password fields, preferably different than your Western account password
  7. Enter the text from the Secure Text image
  8. Click the "Create Account" button

You should see a "Created" confirmation page after you click the "Create Account" button. You should also receive an introduction email titled "ResponseWare Participant Registration" sent to your email address.

You can now log into to join a clicker session, change your password, or update your email address.

If you forget your password, you can reset your password using the "Forgot Password?" link on the login page that will send you an email containing a Reset Password link.

Using your Clicker in class

Physical Clickers

  1. Join the clicker session
    1. When you are in a clicker class, wake your clicker from power-save mode by pressing any number button. Once you've woken your clicker, press the channel button and enter the channel provided by your instructor. Once you have done this, press the select button. You are now connected to the class session.
  2. Answering questions
    1. Your clicker will know what type of question is being asked and automatically display the correct answer format. To answer questions asked by your instructor, press a number button to enter your response.
    2. Then hit the select button to send.

Your clicker will go to sleep when it has been idle for about a minute. The screen will go blank when this happens. Don't worry when this happens. Just press any button and your clicker will wake up.

Connecting to ResponseWare in class

  1. If your instructor is using virtual clickers in class, connect to Western's wireless network with your personal mobile device, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone
    • Instructions for connecting to Western's wireless network can be found on the ITS website
  2. Once you are connected to the Internet, choose how you will connect to ResponseWare:
  3. Enter the session ID that your instructor will provide you during class
  4. If you are prompted for information on the next screen, such as name or user data,
    1. ask your intructor which information he or she requires
    2. type in your information, as required by your instructor
    3. click the "Continue" button to connect to the session
    • Note: all fields are optional, but might be required by your instructor. Ask your instructor if you are unsure about what information he or she requires.
  5. If it connected to your instructor's session, you will be prompted to answer questions once the instructor opens polling
  6. If it did not connect to your instructor's session, confirm you entered the correct session id and try again

Connecting to ResponseWare using the website

  1. Go to
  2. If your instructor recommends logging into ResponseWare, click the "Login" link in the top right corner and log in using your ResponseWare account that you've created
    • Note: If you do not have a ResponseWare account, create one using the instructions in the section titled "Creating a ResponseWare account" above.

Connecting to ResponseWare using the ResponseWare mobile app

The ResponseWare mobile app no longer works with Western's ResponseWare. Using your mobile device, please visit to access a ResponseWare/virtual clicker session.
  1. After downloading the free "ResponseWare" app from your respective mobile app stores or app marketplaces, launch the ResponseWare app on your smart phone or tablet
  2. Press the "i" circle in the bottom right corner of the app
  3. Change the ResponseWare server address from "" to "".
