Fourth Year

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started first year?

First-year is not the time to have everything figured out. As much as it feels like you should know and be able to do everything, things like your classes and extra-curriculars can be changed to give you time to figure things out. Also, don't take all essay courses at once! I learned that one the hard way.

What was your favourite first-year course in Arts and Humanities?

I enjoyed ENGLISH 1020E. It was a great introduction to a variety of literature and the beginning of university-level analysis.

How did you decide on your Major or Honors Specialization?

I actually didn't settle on my modules until the end of first-year. I was enrolled in a different combination of Arts and Humanities modules, but after my first-year I realized not all of them were for me. Thankfully, I switched over to a double major in French Studies and English Language and Literature and am loving my degree.

How did you learn to find your way around such a big place?

Having lived in London for most of my life, I was familiar with some of the main buildings around campus. But when it came to finding classes in confusing buildings like Somerville, I used the ClassFind website. I definitely recommend this to any incoming first-year student!

Are your professors approachable?

I've made some great connections with professors who care for their students. After knowing them for some time I know I can come to them if I need any help, even if it's for a different class!

What do you do if you need help with your time management? or if you're ill? or if something happens at home or whatever?

For time management and other studying skills, I contacted Learning Development and Success. I spent some time in one-on-one sessions and learned how to learn in university. If something else happens, I know I can get in touch with Academic Counselling who have always been there to help.
