Galois Theory

Math4120B/9020B : Field theory

Winter 2020.

Course description : Automorphisms of fields, separable and normal extensions, splitting fields, fundamental theorem of Galois theory, primitive elements, Lagrange's theorem. Finite fields and their Galois groups, cyclotomic extensions and polynomials, applications of Galois theory to geometric constructions and solution of algebraic equations.

Meeting Times and location : MWF 10.30-11.30pm, MC 108

Marks : 5 assignments worth 10% each.

            Final exam worth 50% (oral exam, approximately 10 minutes long)

COVID-19 update: This course is now a pass/fail course. If you need a numerical score for the course you have the option to write a written 3 hour exam once the university reopens.
