The Western Mathematics Exposition Competition

The Western University Mathematics Exposition Competition was initiated by AWM Western and the Department of Mathematics to connect to a more general audience and spark interest in studying mathematics at Western. In this competition, teams of 2-3 of highschool students (Grades 10-12) will work under the supervision of a mentor (A high school teacher, senior undergraduate, or graduate student) on a project and produce a poster that will be entered into the competition. The mentors will serve as guidance to the team’s research on topics in one of the announced themes

Not only will this competition aim at fostering interest in higher mathematics among students, but it will also offer an opportunity for students to experience learning beyond the high school curriculum and practicing skills for mathematical research such as writing and presenting mathematics.

The submitted posters will first be reviewed to ensure that they meet all the requirements, they will then go through a panel of judges at Western University (graduate students, faculty). The judges will choose 3 winning teams, which will be awarded monetary prizes as well as a year of WolframAlpha Notebook Edition. We are committed to making all posters available at all participating high schools as well as Middlesex College in weekly showcase form. These posters will also be available online.

Timeline (Extended New Deadlines)

  • Deadline for team registration: December 15th (themes will be released then too)
  • Deadline for submission (extended deadline): 5:00 pm, Friday, February 3rd
  • The result on the prize night that will be held on February 15st
  • February-March 2023: Showcasing the posters in the high schools

Team Registration (closed)

Students of grades 10, 11, and 12 can register as teams of two or three to attend the competition. The teams will work on posters about some mathematical concepts under the supervision of paired mentors (high school teachers, and senior undergraduate students).

Note: Students in grade 9 or 12+ are also welcome to register, as long as they are part of a team that includes at least one student from grades 10 to 12.

Mentor Registration (Closed)

The high school teachers and senior undergraduate students can register as mentors for the teams. If a team could choose a registered mentor or we will pair the teams with mentors. Each mentor should commit a total of 10-15 hours during the preparation time of the competition which will go from November to early January.

This was made possible by the generosity of our donors as well as the financial support from the department of mathematics, School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, and  Wolfram.
