Discover Research Funding Opportunities and Potential Research Partners with Pivot-RP

This session offers an introduction to Pivot-RP, describing and demonstrating the tools and databases in Pivot-RP that facilitate the discovery of research funding opportunities of varying types from a comprehensive listing of research funders/sponsors. Attendees will learn how to claim and edit their researcher profiles, how to apply filters to identify relevant funding opportunities, and what actions they may take to track and share specific opportunities. Additional resources for support and learning will be identified.

Blocks of Impact: Expanding the ways to showcase your research and scholarship

The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) recognizes the need to improve the ways in which the outputs of scholarly research are evaluated. This session will explore different blocks of impact adapted from a recently developed DORA tool. Learn how to showcase your academic achievements in different ways, from direct contributions in your field to impact beyond academia. Attendees will leave knowing how to track impact from different perspectives, what resources and tools are available for support. Join us and enhance your research impact description.

Does my Research Include or Have Implications for Indigenous Knowledges, Lands, and/or People?

Learn how to answer/understand this question when your research is not perceived as Indigenous research.

The objectives of this session will be to understand that Indigenous research is more than qualitative/community-based research:

• Learn about the lands where their research takes place
• The Indigenous people who live there & history
• The methodologies and/or materials they are working with
• Perhaps there is a place for relationship building and/or (eventual partnerships) and if so – how to begin engaging respectfully.

Research Data Management: Plans, tools and tri-agency requirements

1–3 p.m.

This workshop will teach participants how to write a strong research data management plan (DMP) that can be incorporated into a grant application. The Canadian Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, released early in 2021, introduced new requirements for researchers applying for grants from CIHR, SSHRC, and NSERC. We will discuss the policy requirements,  introduce important elements of a data management plan, and discusses recommendations for data sharing and archiving. We will also demonstrate DMP Assistant, a Western-customized tool for writing Data Management Plans that will walk you through the creation of a DMP and help you choose the most appropriate, locally supported technologies.

Building Intentional, Reciprocal and Long-Lasting Partnerships in Research

The aim of this session is to explore and provide concrete approaches to building research partnerships, with principles of inclusion and co-creation at the forefront, including approaches to patient engagement. The session will consist of three sections:

1. How to intentionally include diverse voices in your research, by Alexandra Levine (PhD), EDID in Research Officer, Western Research
2. What does a successful research partnership look like? Two examples from the health sector: "Nothing about us that isn’t led by us” Shokoufeh Modanloo (RN, PhD), Assistant Professor, School of Nursing; "Building authentic and sustainable partnerships for meaningful engagement" Katie Kowalski (PT, PhD), Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Physical Therapy

We will address and discuss questions such as: 

• What are some ways in which you can integrate diverse perspectives throughout your project?
• What understanding and capacity do you need to engage diverse, and often underrepresented, groups within the research environment?
• How one can foster a climate in which researchers, health care providers, decision-makers and policy-makers understand the value of patient involvement throughout the research process?

Research-Creation: A primer on integrating creativity into your research program

This session provides an overview of research-creation as it applies to SSHRC-eligible fields and provokes consideration of the ways in which research-creation can be integrated into research programs. The aim of this session is to increase awareness of what research creation can entail in order to develop innovative research methods and promote faculty eligibility to related grant programs.

An overview of equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and knowledge exchange as well as their intersection will be explored in this session. Learn how strategies to ensure EDI align with integrated knowledge exchange and build inclusive engagement. Attendees will be introduced to a tool to help guide the development of meaningful and impactful knowledge exchange and EDI practices that enhance research excellence across the research life cycle – from the team and environment, design and analysis, through to dissemination and exchange of research.

Six Tools to Help You Show Your Research Impact

This session will provide an overview and comparison of six tools that can be used to demonstrate research impact: Web of Science, InCites, Scopus, Google Scholar, Altmetric Explorer, and Scholarship@Western. Attendees will leave knowing how to use these six tools to find 20+ individual indicators to enhance your research impact description, which tools to use when and the differences between Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.
