Uplifting Blackness: A Showcase of Art by Western's Black Student Community

"Uplifting Blackness: A Showcase of Art by Western's Black Student Community" is an initiative organized by Health and Wellness in Western Student Experience aimed to help build and strengthen connections between the Health and Wellness Team and Black students at Western. The gallery is focused on celebrating Black culture, history, and experiences and uplifting the voices of Western’s Black Student Community.

Students interested in submitting can email their submission to black_art@uwo.ca. Artists whose work is published on the virtual gallery will receive a $100 Visa gift card.

Who Can Submit Art? 

  • Any Black-identifying Western student can submit their own original art to the gallery.
  • This includes part-time and full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students as well as all affiliate students.

What Forms of Art Can I Submit?

  • Submission can include various Black and Afrocentric artistic expressions.
  • We are accepting submissions of spoken word poetry, creative writing, photography, painting, dance, stepping, music, clothing, pottery, digital art, and video.

Submission Requirements:

  • Artwork submitted must be your own original artwork.
  • Writing: poetry submissions should be no longer than 50 lines and all other creative writing shouldn't exceed 1500 words. Please submit writing as a Word doc. File names should contain your full name. 
  • Video: video submissions should be no longer than 10 minutes long and submitted as an mp4. If your file is too large to send as an email attachment, please submit via a shared One Drive or Google Drive link. File names should contain your full name. 
  • Music: music submissions can be submitted as audio mp3 files, or be a recorded performance as an mp4 video file. You can submit original compositions or performances/covers. File names should contain the title of your composition/song and your full name. 
  • Photography and digital art: all photos should be submitted as high-quality JPEG or PNG files. File names should contain your full name. 
  • Other: if submitting paintings, pottery, clothing, dance, or stepping, please submit by taking a photo of/scanning your work and submit as a high-quality JPEG or PNG or as a video recording submitted as an mp4. File names should contain your full name. 
  • All submissions should contain a short artist's statement (250-300 words). This statement can briefly explain your piece, share the inspiration behind it, or how/what you used to create it.

How do I submit?

  • You can submit your work by emailing black_art@uwo.ca 
  • The subject of your email should be "Virtual Gallery Submission: [your name]"
  • Include your submission and artist statement as email attachments
  • In the body of your email, you must include your student number
