From the Editorial Board by Melba Dalsin, Sharday Mosurinjohn, and Jon Sarma

First we would like to express our pleasure in having the opportunity to create an undergraduate journal that recognizes the contributions of students in the Visual Arts. We are grateful to Prof. Kirsty Robertson for initiating a writing project in conjunction with the Annual Juried Exhibition, and for mentoring us through the process of compiling the inaugural issue of the Western Undergraduate Journal of Art and Visual Culture (WUJAVC). We were very impressed by the quality of the papers submitted and the willingness of students to work with us during the editorial process.

Our sincere thanks extend to Prof. Susan Edelstein for her assistance, Prof. Patrick Mahon for his willingness to support such a new venture, the ArtLab Steering Committee for its input. We also thank Andrew Gugan for his technical support, Kim Clarke for his photographic expertise, and of course the students who submitted their work, as well as the professors who helped us by soliciting submissions.

In creating this journal we hope to have begun a tradition of literary excellence that will be carried on by students for years to come. The students enrolled in Visual Art and Art History at Western engage with some of the most culturally relevant and socially pressing issues in the contemporary world. It is our hope that WUJAVC provides a forum through which these critical discourses can reach a wider audience and facilitate communication on an ever-increasing scale.
