About
The Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory (CSSL) was founded in 2024 as a partnership between Western University and social impact fund ImpactWX, following on the successes of the Northern Tornadoes Project (established 2017), the Northern Hail Project (established 2022), and decades of Western wind engineering research. The establishment of the CSSL heralds a new era in severe storms research in Canada and strengthens Canada’s reputation globally as a leader in the field.
CSSL Vision
That the CSSL is the authoritative source for severe convective storms research and data in Canada, thereby improving the safety and well-being of Canadians.
CSSL Mission
To advance the detection, documentation and understanding of severe convective storms and their impacts across Canada.
CSSL Advisory Council
The purpose of the CSSL Advisory Council is to provide expert advice and strategic input to the CSSL Executive Director and the leadership team and to support the direction and mission of the CSSL. Membership on the Advisory Council will include key opinion leaders in severe convective storms, particularly, although not exclusively, from partner organizations.
We aim to have a diversity of views on the committee, including international perspectives, as well as a range of expertise including meteorology, engineering, and social science. See the CSSL's Team page for the list of current members.
CSSL Projects
There are currently three projects operating under the CSSL umbrella:
