Project Requirements

All projects submitted for the competition must meet the requirements of their categories. Submissions that do not meet one or more requirements will not be considered for judging.

Poster Requirements

All posters submitted for the competition must meet the following requirements. Submissions that do not meet one or more requirements will not be considered for judging.

  • Size of poster: 24 inch by 36 inch
  • File format: jpeg with resolution 200-600 dpi
  • Orientation: Portrait or Landscape
  • Font Size: The font size must not be less than 11 pt.

Content should be clear and legible for a reader standing at a 50-cm distance from the poster on a wall. Since type and color can impact the visibility of different fonts, there is no minimum/maximum font size, but legibility/accessibility will be a notable component of the poster’s adjudication in the Presentation judging criteria (worth 20% of the overall mark).

  • Graphic limit: At least 30% and at most 50% of the poster must be filled out with graphics. This does not include white space/background, but this does include supplementary visuals such as icons, images, diagrams, and figures.
  • Word count limit: We also won’t enforce a strict minimum/maximum number of words, since the complexity of the work can influence the amount of text necessary for explication, but we recommend a word count of 500-1000 words. The whole poster should be readable in 5-10 minutes to the average high school student.
  • Title: Each poster must contain a title that clearly shows the topic covered in the poster. The title should be under 100 characters including subtitles if there are any.

Recommendation: The title is recommended to be located at the top of the poster and printed with a larger font size.

  • Team members' information: Full names of all the members must be listed in the alphabetical order of their last name. Each name should be followed by a bracket containing the grade of the student and the school's name. E.g. John James (Grade Y, XXXX highschool).
  • Mentor Information: The poster must contain the full name of the mentor followed by the (Teacher or Undergraduate Mentor, school name). E.g. Hanna Hola (Teacher Mentor, XXXX school).

Recommendation: The information of team members as well as the mentor is recommended to be posted under the title of the poster.

  • Acknowledgment statements and logos: The posters must include the QR code for the competition webpage and the sponsors' logos as appearing below on this page.
All logos and the QR code must have the same height. The height of the logos and the QR code must be between 1 to 2 inches.
The QR Code (can be found below) should be accompanied by the following statement: “An entry to the Western Mathematics Exposition Competition 2023-24, organized by Western Mathematics.”
The logos should be accompanied by the following statement: “This Competition is made possible by the generosity of our donors and the support of the Department of Mathematics, School of Mathematical and Statistical SciencesThe Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, and the Canadian Math Society." (logos of the sponsors listed below)

  • Reference list: Citations could be formatted in any existing citation style. However, the citation format and in-text citation must be consistent. Visit here for the details of different styles.

Recommendation: The recommended citation format is "amsplain". For more details visit here.

Credit: The video introduction should include (a slide or as a subtitle) the statement: “An entry to the Western Mathematics Exposition Competition 2023-24, organized by Western Mathematics.” and the QR Code (can be found below) of the first page of the competition.

  • Video Closing: At least one final page must be included at the end of the video. You are allowed to include more than one page to acknowledge all the requirements, so long you meet the file size and length requirements.
