No 2023 Tornado Warning Report Card

In 2023 across Canada, 86 tornadoes were recorded with only five of them being rated EF2 or higher. Only 67 of these were classified as Tornadoes (over land) with the rest being Tornadoes (over water).

This results in a sample size that is too low for a statistically accurate tornado warning performance assessment for 2023.

NTP plans to instead to release its next tornado warning performance assessment in spring 2025, and it will include recorded tornadoes from both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. This is similar to our first assessment that combined recorded tornadoes from 2019 to 2021.
