Merit-based Awards

Awarded annually to an undergraduate Nursing student in any program and any year who is a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident based on academic achievement, leadership skills and/or a strong work ethic. Nursing students in the Western-Fanshawe program are eligible for consideration. Preference will be given to a student who is making a career change and/or has family commitments. To be considered, students must submit an application to the Nursing Office by September 30. The recipient will be selected by the Nursing Scholarship and Awards Committee. This award was made possible by a generous donation from Paul Bradley (BA 1977) and his family.

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student entering fourth year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program or fourth level of the Compressed Time Frame BScN program, based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average). Preference will be given to applicants who are members of Iota Omicron, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and who demonstrate active involvement in global or local community activities. Applicants must submit a one-page statement outlining these attributes to the Director's office in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing by September 30th. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing. This scholarship was established through the generous donations of the Iota Omicron Chapter members.

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has completed year 3 of the basic undergraduate Nursing program, has a minimum 'A' average and demonstrates an interest in and commitment to family and community nursing. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarships and Awards Committee of the School of Nursing. This scholarship was made possible by a bequest from the late Jean W. Forrest through Foundation Western.

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student in any year beyond year one in Kinesiology, Nursing or the Bachelor of Health Sciences program, who has achieved at least a 75% average while demonstrating leadership in the community and participating in extra-curricular activities. Application forms are available from the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted no later than September 30. Recipients will be chosen by the Faculty of Health Sciences Scholarship Committee. Established in 1997 through the generosity of Western parents.

Awarded annually to a student who has successfully completed Year I of the undergraduate Nursing program. Preference will be given to a student who has been involved in extracurricular activities within the Faculty of Health Sciences or university community; demonstrates a special commitment to psychological/mental health or palliative care nursing; and is a warm, compassionate human being with enthusiasm for life who shows personal and professional accountability. The Scholarships and Awards Committee will review the faculty nominated candidates and select the recipient. This award was established by the family and friends of Suzanne Hermann (BScN `72), in her memory.

Suzanne Hermann (1950-1975) received her B.Sc.N. from Western University in 1972 and devoted her short career to the public health community while struggling with mental health issues. Suzanne's father, Kenneth Hermann, who pioneered efforts to establish palliative care in London, passed away in 2014. The Hermann family created this award to assist students who have expressed an interest in mental health or palliative care nursing who will positively impact the future of the health care community.

HOW TO APPLY:
Applicants must submit a one-page statement outlining these attributes to the Director's office in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing by September 30th.

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in Year 3 of the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree program based on academic achievement and their career interest in Nursing. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or eligible to work in Canada. The award will continue in Year 4 provided that recipients maintain a 70% average and full-time status in their Nursing program. If a recipient does not qualify to maintain the award, a replacement recipient in the same year will be selected. Recipients will have an opportunity to interview for a work term or internship with WSIB. Students are not guaranteed a work term or internship with WSIB. An offer of full-time employment with WSIB may also be extended pending successful completion of the program and work term, at WSIB’s sole discretion. A recipient is not obligated to participate in the work term or accept employment with WSIB following graduation to receive or retain the award. Students must complete an application form in accordance with the deadline announced annually by the Faculty of Health Sciences (approx. September 30). A limited number of applicants will be chosen to participate in an interview. A selection committee in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing will short list applicants for the award. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a representative from WSIB, the Dean of Health Sciences and the Director of the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing or their designates. Final selection of recipients will be made by the selection committee in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing.

Value: 2 at $7,500, awarded annually, continuing for 2 years ($15,000 per student)
Effective Date: 2024-2025 to 2029-2030 academic years inclusive (final new recipients selected in 2028-2029)

Needs-based Awards

To be considered for Need Based Awards students are required to complete the Financial Assistance application. The application becomes available in late August each year through the Student Centre website. Please note that the deadline to submit the Financial Assistance application and any supporting documentation (if applicable) for Need Based Award consideration is September 30th. The application is used for consideration for all need based awards, however, some awards also require supporting documentation.

Awarded to a third or fourth year student in the School of Nursing who has demonstrated financial need and academic achievement. Online financial assistance applications are available through Student Center and must be submitted by September 30th. The Nursing Scholarship committee will select the recipient after the Office of the Registrar assesses financial need. This award is funded in part with donations from the Province of Ontario through the OSOTF program and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

HOW TO APPLY: ONLINE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION

Awarded to full-time students in Year 2 of the Western - Fanshawe Collaborative Nursing program, based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and demonstrated financial need. These awards will continue in Years 3 and 4 of the recipients' degree program in Nursing, provided that the students maintain full time status, a 70% average and demonstrate financial need each year. Online financial assistance applications are available through Student Center. Students in year 2 of the Fanshawe stream can obtain a paper application through the Registrar's website. The deadline to submit an application is September 30th. If a recipient does not qualify to continue, a replacement recipient from the same year will be selected. The Nursing Scholarship committee will select the recipient after the Office of the Registrar assesses financial need. These awards were established by a gift from the Late E. Jean Kunz (BScN '36). Recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

HOW TO APPLY: ONLINE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing Program, based on demonstrated financial need and demonstrating a commitment to professionalism and a dedication to the charitable service of others. Online financial assistance applications are available through Student Center and must be submitted by September 30th. The Scholarship and Awards Committee in Nursing will select the recipient after the Registrar’s Office has assessed the financial need. This award was established by the Dempsey family in memory of Elaine and James Dempsey. Elaine V. Dempsey (1902-1985) was a long- time nurse, Children's Aid and Travelers’ Aid worker in the London area. She also conducted award-winning charitable work for the Cancer Society in her retirement. She achieved her dream of sending her two sons to Western University while serving the sick and needy citizens in her community. Her eldest son James (1934-2017) was a long- time teacher and coach in the London area with a strong legacy of devotion to his family, students and athletes. This award, in their names, is intended to provide financial assistance to a nursing student who has shown both academic achievement and community service.

HOW TO APPLY: ONLINE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION

Awarded to full-time students in Year 2 of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and financial need. The desired candidates would be bright, motivated and passionate about nursing. These awards will continue in Years 3 and 4 of Nursing provided that the recipients maintain a 70% and continue to demonstrate financial need each year. Online financial assistance applications are available through Student Center and must be submitted by September 30th. The Nursing Scholarship committee will select the recipient after the Office of the Registrar assesses financial need. If a student fails to retain the continuing award, another recipient from the same year will be selected as a replacement. These awards were established by Mr. John Gilmour (MBA '63) and his family, in honour of his late wife Endla Gilmour, who graduated from the School of Nursing in 1963. This award is funded in part with donations from the Province of Ontario through the OSOTF program and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

The Nursing Scholarship committee will select the recipient after the Office of the Registrar assesses financial need. This award was made possible by donations from the family and friends of Lynn Allen.

The recipient will have demonstrated excellence in all five domains of practice in each clinical rotation and will have been recognized by faculty and/or clinical practice agencies as an exceptional practitioner. Online financial-need applications are available through the Office of the Registrar's Web site. The School of Nursing Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient after the Office of the Registrar assesses financial need. These awards were established by a gift from Mrs. Catherine Whelen (BScN `62) and Dr. Warren Whelen.
