Comparative Literature Graduate Student Funding:
Domestic MA
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers financial assistance to qualified graduate students. Domestic Master's student in Comparative Literature are offered Graduate Student employment (in 2019-20 worth $13, 345.70 for the 8-month academic year) and a Western Graduate Research Scholarship in the amount of $4,550.77 for the one year of the program.
International MA
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers financial assistance to qualified graduate students. International MA Students in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities are eligible for a $3000 Western Graduate Research Scholarship intended to help defray the cost of international tuition fees.
Domestic PhD
Eligible students in the PhD program are guaranteed a minimum financial package (from all sources) of $13,000 plus tuition for each of four years. This package is normally composed of Graduate Student employment (in 2019-20 worth $13, 345.70 for the 8-month academic year) and a Western Graduate Research Scholarship ($10,050.77 for Canadian PhD students). All amounts quoted are for 2019-20.
International PhD
Eligible students in the PhD program are guaranteed a minimum financial package (from all sources) of $13,000 plus tuition for each of four years. This package is normally composed of Graduate Student employment (in 2019-20 worth $13, 345.70 for the 8-month academic year) and a Western Graduate Research Scholarship ($10,650.77 for International PhD students). All amounts quoted are for 2019-20.
Graduate Student Employment work on average 10 hours per week or about 140 hours per term. Duties will vary according to a students particular assignment.
Eligible graduate students in Comparative Literature have a strong record of success in prestigious external award competitions, which provide for a higher level of scholarship support. Our students have for instance held awards under the Canada Graduate Scholarship Program (CGS Masters and Doctoral), the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Program, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program, and the Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS) Program. All of these awards, subject to certain conditions, may be held in conjunction with a GraduateTeaching Assistantship.
Fees are paid in three installments in the fall, winter, and summer terms. For more information on fees, please consult the the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Research/Travel Funding:
Graduate students in Comparative Literature are eligible to apply for a number of competitive awards to support research-related expenses. The usual uses for such funds include a) visiting archives and libraries to conduct research, or b) attending an academic conference to present the results of ones research. In either case the research in question must be directly related to ones thesis project. Departmental deadlines and application processes are announced by e-mail for each of these competitions to all graduate students in Comparative Literature.

Graduate Thesis Research Fund
Applications that offer a clear rationale for the proposed activity, exhibit innovation, and contain a
budget explaining fully how the money requested will be spent, will receive preference.
Who can apply: Awards are only available to full-time students at The University of Western Ontario
who are enrolled in a graduate program leading to a Masters or PhD degree. Applicants must be
engaged in writing a thesis/dissertation as a part of their degree requirements. The applicant must be
eligible for the program both at the time of application and at the time of the expense. Should the
awardee cease to be a student at the University during the tenure of the award, the award will be
cancelled and all remaining and recoverable monies returned to the common fund.
Value: The maximum award will be $1,500.00.
The research expenses should occur between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022. We will not
accept retroactive requests.
Unlike the other three awards, the Graduate Thesis Research Award is not a scholarship. The students
will be required to submit receipts to be reimbursed.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities Alumni Graduate Awards
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities Alumni Graduate Awards are awarded to full time graduate
students registered in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and enrolled in any graduate program in the
Faculty of Arts and Humanities who can demonstrate financial need and are maintaining a minimum
78% average. Doctoral candidates have priority, but Masters candidates are also eligible. The awards
will be used to support graduate research expenses during the period January 1, 2022 to December 31,
2022. Applicants must supply a project description and a detailed budget. Recipients will be selected
by the Associate Dean Research of Arts and Humanities upon consultation with the Graduate Chairs.
Value: up to $9,000 will be available, with no single award to exceed $1,500.
Criteria: Recipients must meet OSOTF eligibility requirements including demonstrable financial need
and evidence of Ontario residency. To be eligible, you must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent
Resident and meet one of the Ontario residency requirements.

Mary Routledge Fellowships
Awarded to full-time graduate students registered in the in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral
Studies in a graduate program based in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Doctoral candidates have
priority, but Masters candidates are also eligible.
These Fellowships will be awarded to graduate students in order to cover expenses incurred as a result
of a need to consult archival material off campus, or to otherwise travel in the context of their research.
Candidates must have maintained a minimum A- average and exhibit research ability or potential.
These fellowships were established through Foundation Western by a bequest from the late Mary B.
Routledge (BA >24).
Value: The numbers and amounts of award will vary with applications in any given year.

Lynne-Lionel Scott Fellowship in Canadian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Awarded to a graduate student(s) registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies enrolled in a
Graduate Program within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with a demonstrated interest in Canadian
studies and a minimum 78% average.
Doctoral candidates have priority, but Masters candidates are also eligible. The Scholarship will be
used to support research in Canadian arts, culture, literatures, language, or philosophy. This
scholarship was established by Mrs. Rose Lynne Scott, through Foundation Western to encourage
studies in the area of Canadian studies.
Value: A maximum of three awards per year, up to a combined total of $2,500.

Graduate Student Travel Grant
GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS are available to full-time graduate students for travel to a conference or a meeting at which they present original scholarly work derived from their thesis research, or to travel to conduct original research for their thesis work B between May 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. GTA Funds through PSAC 610
Graduate students employed as Graduate Teaching Assistants can apply for funds through their union, PSAC 610. The union has both scholarships and funds for various student issues. These applications are accessed, applied and adjudicated entirely through the union. Please visit their website here for more information.
Graduate Student support through SOGS
Graduate students at Western are supported by the Society of Graduate Students. SOGS is the graduate student union and advocacy organization at Western.
