AI-Based Classification of Children's Speech-Sound Development
Speech and language samples are key components of Speech-Language Pathologist's assessment practices. However, collecting, transcribing, and analyzing children's speech and language samples are time-consuming and difficult. This project looks to develop a novel Large Language Model based framework for transcribing and analyzing pre-schooler's speech. If successful, this framework could be leveraged to aid in clinically feasible outcome monitoring approaches.
Vocal Development in Children with Permanent Hearing Loss
Early intervention is crucial to supporting language development for children with language learning disorders. But early intervention requires accurate tools to identify when very young children are showing signs of difficulty learning language, as well as to identify which aspects of language they are struggling with. These projects explore the role that Canonical Babbling plays in later language outcomes, and developing clinically feasible and useful tools for early identification of language impairment.
Barriers & Facilitators to Implementing Spoken Language Assessment Procedures
Results from spoken language outcome monitoring can be used to evaluate intervention services and support individual treatment planning. These projects partner with Ontario's Infant Hearing Program and Preschool Speech & Language Program to develop, implement, and evaluate, new tools for measuring spoken language outcomes in children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing.
Characterizing Evidence-Practice Gaps in Implementation Science
Implementation Science is concerned with moving best available research evidence into clinical practice. These projects are interested in understanding who decides that clinical practice needs to change, and who selects the research evidence to implement in clinical practice.
