One Day SEG Short Course in Iron Ores, March 2, 2013

January 16, 2013

The Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter and Resource Geoscience Western are pleased to announce we will be holding a 1 day symposium on Saturday March 2nd immediately preceding the PDAC 2013. The theme for this year's short course is: "A New Age in the Economics of Iron and its Alloys:Targeting High-Grade Direct Shipping Iron Ores”. This short course will focus on processes that upgrade protore BIFs and explore BIF/IOCG connections. It will be of interest to exploration companies re-aligning strategies to meet the shifting metal markets of the 21st century. The views expressed at this short course will span industry, government and academic perspectives. Proceeds from the short course go towards funding an SEG London Student Chapter Field Trip to the Dominican Republic in May, 2013."

The demand for iron and its alloys has risen sharply due to intense global industrialization since the beginning of the new millennium. Major investments have not only been in the Labrador Trough, but also in the high arctic Mary River District and on the major new chromite reserves in the Ring of Fire District of the James Bay Lowlands. Although much has been written on the origin of Iron Formations, new production is focusing on high-grade (>60% Fe) direct-shipping iron ores. This short course will focus on processes that upgrade pro-tore BIFs and explore BIF/IOCG connections. It will be of interest to exploration companies re-aligning strategies to meet the shifting metal markets of the 21st century. The views expressed at this short course will span industry, government and academic perspectives.
