**Randal Cole Scholarship In Mathematics**

**student entering second year**of an Honours Specialization in Mathematics (preferred) or a double Major in an Honours degree that includes Mathematics who, in the opinion of the Mathematics Department, has the best academic performance. The student must obtain an 80% in Calculus 1000A/B or 1500A/B and Calculus 1501A/B.

**Albert O. Jeffery Scholarship in Mathematics**

Awarded to a full-time **third year student** on the basis of academic merit (minimum 80%) who is continuing in fourth year of an Honours Specialization in Mathematics (preferred) or a double Major in an Honours degree that includes Mathematics.

**Albert O. Jeffery Scholarship in Applied Mathematics**

Awarded to a full-time **third year student** on the basis of academic (minimum 80%) who is continuing in fourth year of an Honors Specialization in Applied Mathematics (preferred) or double Major in an Honors degree that includes Applied Mathematics.

**Value:** $400

**Honor Robinson Hair Memorial Scholarship**

Awarded to a **full-time student** in any year of an Honours Specialization in Mathematics (preferred) or a double Major in an Honours degree which includes Mathematics, based on academic achievement. Preference will be given to a female student. The Faculty of Science Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient.

This award was established by Ms. Jane L. Hair, Mrs. Judith Hair Weinstein and Mr. James Hair in memory of Honour Robinson Hair (HBA '32) who was one of the first female graduates from Western's Honours Mathematics program. Established through Foundation Western.**Value:** 1 at $800

**Leland Ritcey Scholarship**

**second year student**with an outstanding performance in the principal courses of an Honours Specialization in Mathematics (preferred) or a double Major in an Honours degree that includes Mathematics. Preference will be given to a student with an overall 80% average in Calculus 2502A/B and 2503A/B.

**Mervin Wass Scholarship**

Awarded annually to a **full-time student** registered in the Faculty of Science in an Honours Bachelor degree with an Honours Specialization in Mathematics or a double Major that includes Mathematics, who has a minimum average of 80%. The recipient will be selected by the Department of Mathematics based on academic achievement.

**Borwein Memorial Prize**

**Value:**1 at $150

**Class of '49 Prizes**

One award annually to the student who has obtained the highest mark in Calculus 1501A/B and who, in the opinion of the Departments of Mathematics, has achieved a high overall academic standing.

One award annually to the student who has obtained the highest mark in Linear Algebra 1600A/B and who, in the opinion of the Departments of Mathematics, has achieved a high overall academic standing.

One award annually to the student who has obtained the highest mark in Computer Science 1027 A/B and who, in the opinion of the Department of Computer Science, has achieved a high overall academic standing.

One award annually to the student who has obtained the highest mark in Statistical Sciences 1023A/B and who, in the opinion of the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Science, has achieved a high overall academic standing.

**Jake Greydanus Applied Mathematics Prize**

Awarded to the student with the highest combined average in Calculus 2502a/b and 2503a/b.

Established by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Jake Greydanus.**Value:** 1 at $1,000

**Leland Ritcey Prize**

Awarded to an undergraduate student who exhibits the greatest proficiency in solving advanced Mathematical problems.

Endowed in memory of the late Dr. L. F. Ritcey by students, colleagues and friends. **Value:** 1 at $500

## Gold Medals

**Dillion Gold Medal**

The Dillon Gold Medal is named for Richard Maurice Dillon (1920 – 2008), a decorated war veteran, confidante of Ontario premier John Robarts, recipient of the Order of Canada and first dean of the Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Western Ontario. Richard Dillon was a gold medalist in mathematics at Western and was a strong supporter of the creation of the Applied Mathematics Department.

The Dillon Gold Medal is awarded to the graduating student with the highest combined average in any Honors Applied Mathematics program.

**Joseph J. and Annie R. Kingston Gold Medal**

Endowed by the late Dr. H. R. Kingston in memory of his parents.

Awarded to a graduating student in honors Pure Mathematics,

**Gordon, Miriam and Peter Magee Gold Medal and Scroll**

Endowed in memory of Professor Gordon R. Magee (Head of the Department of Mathematics at this University from 1950 to 1967) and his wife Miriam, by A. Peter R. Magee and David G. Briggs.

Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in one of the following, with preference given to a graduating student in a non-honors program: Specialization in Mathematics; Major in Mathematics; Double Minor from the Department of Mathematics and one of the Departments of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or Statistical and Actuarial Sciences; or a three-year degree program in Mathematics, or Mathematics and Statistics, or Mathematics and Computer Science.

**Ray Leroi Allen Scholarship**

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student registered in the Faculty of Science in any year beyond Year 1, who is enrolled in an Honours Specialization, Major, or Specialization in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy or Chemistry. Candidates must have a minimum 85% average and demonstrated financial need. Online financial assistance applications can be obtained from Student Center and must be submitted **by September 30**. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarships and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Science after the Registrar's Office has assessed financial need. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Office of the Registrar.

This scholarship was established with Foundation Western by Prof. John David Jackson (BSC '46, DSC '89) to honour Prof. Ray Leroi Allen who served for 53 years in the Physics Department at Western.**Value:** 1 at $2,800

**Garnet Alexander Woonton Scholarship**

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student registered in the Faculty of Science in any year beyond year one, who is enrolled in an Honours Specialization or Major in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy or Chemistry. Candidates must have a minimum 85% average and demonstrated financial need. Online financial assistance applications can be obtained through Student Center and must be submitted **by September 30**. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarships and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Science after the Registrar's Office has assessed financial need.

This scholarship was established with Foundation Western by Prof. John David Jackson (BSC '46, DSC '89) in memory of Prof. Gar Woonton who served in the UWO Physics Department from 1931 to 1948 before going to McGill and later Laval. Gar Woonton returned to Western in 1974, and was an Honourary Prof. until his death in 1980.**Value:** 1 at $2,800

**J.H. Blackwell Bursary in Applied Mathematics**

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in the second, third, or fourth year of an Honours Specialization in Applied Mathematics (preferred) or a double Major in an Honours degree which includes Applied Mathematics who demonstrates financial need.

This bursary was established through Foundation Western by Betty Blackwell and the Blackwell family in memory of J.H. Blackwell (MA '47, PhD '52 Physics). Dr. Blackwell taught at Western from 1947 until his retirement in 1986.

**Dr. John Patrick Duffy Memorial Award in Mathematics**

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in any year of an Honours Specialization offered by the School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences (SMSS), or a double Major in an Honours degree that includes a SMSS major, with a minimum 70% average and who is involved in volunteer mentoring programs (which could include, but are not limited to, academic or mental-health related mentoring or coaching) in school or in the community. A one-page statement outlining this involvement must be submitted to the Dean’s Office in Science **by September 30th**. The scholarship and awards committee in the Faculty of Science will select the recipient.

This award was established by a generous gift from friends and colleagues in honour of Dr. John Patrick Duffy (BESc ’61).**Value:** 1 at $1,000

Dr. John Patrick Duffy grew up in a rural community. He and his sister, Maureen, were exceptional students who helped their classmates. Both attended Western University however, Maureen was killed in a traffic accident in 1960. John received his Bachelor of Engineering Science degree from Western in 1961. He worked as a chemical engineer and in 1988, patented a manufacturing process for butyl rubber while working at Polysar Rubber Corp. in Sarnia. Throughout his life, John continued to help young people — the children of coworkers, friends, neighbours -- further their education. He died in 2013 at the age of 74.

**Barbara Newbegin Award in Mathematics**

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in Year 3 or 4 of any Honours Specialization module in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistical and Actuarial Science, based on 70% minimum average and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a female student. Online financial assistance applications are available through Student Center and must be completed **by September 30th**. The Office of the Registrar will assess the candidate's financial need and then the Scholarship Committee in the Faculty of Science will select the recipient.

This award was established by Miss Barbara J. Newbegin (BA '71 Honours Mathematics, MA '72 Mathematics).**Value:** 1 at $3,500

**Mervin Wass Award**

Awarded annually to full-time students registered in an Honours degree program in the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science who have a minimum average of 75% and demonstrate financial need. Applications can be accessed online through Student Center and must be submitted **by September 30**. The Faculty of Science will select the recipient once Registrarial Services determines financial need.

This award qualifies for the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.**Value:** 1 at $4,000
