Debra Jared is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Western Ontario and a fellow of the Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour, and Cognitive Science. She is a former Associate Editor of the Cambridge University Press journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition. Broadly, her research program aims to understand the cognitive processes involved in reading. Her research on bilinguals investigates how their reading in one language is influenced by their knowledge of their other language as well the culture associated with that language. The research uses behavioural, eye tracking and electrophysiological methodology. Much of her research has studied bilinguals who know English and French, but more recently, thanks to the language expertise of her students, the research has been extended to bilinguals whose language in addition to English is Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Korean, or Malay.
