Summary: By definition, the study of animal movement requires using animals in research. Even minimally invasive field studies can impose harm on animals, and our ability to do our research requires ethical oversight and compliance. I will provide updates on the use of animals in research. Current trends include increased transparency of reporting, and a move to animal welfare assessment and cumulative welfare impacts. I will also discuss the distinction betAween ecological impact on populations and welfare impact on individual animals, as we often face trade-offs between these in how we design our studies.
