Associate Professor Maxwell Smith is a bioethicist specializing in the ethics of infectious disease – including preparing for public health emergencies – and the intersection of health equity with social justice. The aim of this program is to enhance ethical readiness for infectious disease emergencies by studying key ethical concerns including resource allocation, and balancing individual rights with societal needs. Working with leading public health decision-makers locally, provincially, and internationally, this research will generate practical guidelines to offer effective ethical guidance during emergencies.
