FM supports local food bank during pandemic

April 7, 2020

On Monday, Facilities Management made a cash donation of $1,878 to the London Food Bank.

Using funds largely collected through Support Services Building fundraisers, Director of Business Operations, Mark Durnin made the carefully counted contribution on behalf of the Division.

“$1,878 was donated as a testament to FM staff past and present who have been caring for our campus and the London community since our founding in 1878,” says Durnin.  “Through wartime, economic crisis, social change and now pandemic, Western steps up to contribute.”

In past years, the funds have been earmarked for local and national charities, including United Way and the MS Society. According to Durnin, the Food Bank was a natural fit for this contribution.

“The leadership team in FM decided that we needed to act quickly,” says Durnin. “Community members are feeling the reductions in their income, and so there is a greater demand on local social services.”

The London Food Bank has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and members of our community will benefit directly from FM’s donation. According to the Food Bank website, Facilities Management’s donation is enough to benefit 75 community members with a week’s worth of emergency groceries.

At this time, the Food Bank administration is seeking monetary donations in lieu of food donations. The “virtual food drive” will raise funds to purchase needed supplies and reduce contact between people.
