Career Progression

There is no telling what you will end up doing in the future, but we do know what students have done in the past. The Biology graduate degree programs were established in 2003, after merger of the former Plant Sciences and Zoology programs. Up till July 2024, 482 MSc and 185 PhD degrees in Biology have been conferred.

PhD

Of the 181 PhD recipients that we have information on, 21% are university professors or postsecondary instructors; 27% are university affiliated Research Associates or Fellows, and 10% are Government Research Scientists or Associates. 9% are Biologists/Conservationists employed by non-government organisations (NGO) like Birds Canada, and 22% are employed in the Biotech industry or in Clinical research.

 

 

 

 

 

 

MSc

Of the 469 MSc recipients that we have information on: 23% went into a PhD program at Western or another University and some of these are now Professors and Research Associates. For MSc recipients who did not enter a PhD program: 3% are College Instructors; 6% are University affiliated Research Technicians; 7% are involved in Government Research or Policy; 12% are Biologists/Conservationists employed by non-government organisations, and 25% are employed in the Biotech industry or in Clinical research. Some MSc recipients have gone on to professions like Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Veterinarian, and Law (14%).
