Interdisciplinary

Western Science views the removal of barriers to interdisciplinary research as critical to its success in an evolving global research and training paradigm. Western Science continues to develop a distinctive environment comprised of 21st-century research facilities designed to serve interdisciplinary and advanced research needs; an array of tools to address complex and multifaceted questions; and people who seek opportunities to transcend disciplinary, institutional and national boundaries to innovate in both the research and training areas, so that we are a destination of choice for outstanding graduate students.

Several Faculty of Science departments participate in collaborative graduate programs. These are add-ons to MSc and PhD programs which offer unique interdisciplinary research experience crossing various departments:

  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Global Health Systems
  • Biostatistics
  • Developmental Biology
  • Molecular Imaging
  • Scientific Computing
  • Earth and Space Exploration

Western Science is also home to the Soochow-Western 2+2 PhD program for students interested in a research project involving synchrotron radiation in science or engineering.
