Application Guidelines

To qualify for an Internship Course Placement, a student must be in the 4th year of a Visual Arts Program and have at minimum 75% grade average in their Visual Arts courses. These requirements are in place because of the demands of the Internship. The internship placement provides the opportunity to apply theoretical learning in real-world work situations.

  • A student registered in this course works for course credit. This includes an average of 6-8 hours a week for an academic term devoted to the internship placement. Each placement is different; however, every placement demands the dedication and focus of the student.
  • The employer’s expectations are that the student will fulfill the terms of the contract, including maintaining the work hours and schedules agreed upon. This work situation differs from the classroom situation. For example, a student may decide to skip a class in order to do something else. At the University this is frowned upon but seen as the student’s responsibility to covered missed course content. However, in the workplace, the responsibility of the employed person is to meet the employer’s expectations: be at the workplace for specific hours; produce the materials/complete the tasks on time; work independently or with a team, as the job requires; (etc.), to ensure their continued employment.
  • Therefore, when a student agrees to an Internship placement, they agree to fulfill the contract and to behave responsibly and professionally at all times. It is the responsibility of the student to discuss the expectations and any concerns they may have about fulfilling any aspects of the position before the placement begins.

Each Intern will be supervised and evaluated on the job by a person (or persons) in the workplace of the partner institution. The Internship Course Coordinator, Prof. Tricia Johnson, will be available to meet and/or be in contact by email with the student and with the supervisors on a regular basis, to discuss the progress of the placement. The final grade is assigned by the Coordinator based on the supervisor’s evaluation and the Intern’s final Internship report/essay (1500 -2000 words), final PowerPoint presentation and Internship journal documenting the day-to-day events/tasks/responsibilities of the Internship. All 3 assignments will be due on the official last day of classes of the semester in which the student is placed.

All applicants will be contacted in August. Applicants who are meeting the Academic Requirements will be further assessed through an interview with Prof. Tricia Johnson, either on-campus or by phone or Zoom.

Once a placement has been determined for an Internship student, the student will have an Interview with the Supervisor at the partner institution. If both parties agree to the internship, the student will be registered into an Internship course, through Special Permission, given by Prof. Tricia Johnson.

Please note: The internship will commence once classes officially begin and the Internship must cease each semester on the last official day of classes.
