WAFAR as a unit resides within the portfolio of the Vice-President (Research).

The WAFAR Director holds a Western Research Chair (Leadership) and works with an interdisciplinary network of collaborative researchers, clinician-scientists, postdoctoral fellows and/or graduate students for a 5-year term.

Reporting to the Vice President (Research), the Director is responsible for advancing WAFAR as an entity that brings together diverse voices from the academic, public, and private sectors worldwide to engage in research, scholarship, and creative activity. The goal is to find solutions to major problems facing humanity. To contribute towards this goal, the Director identifies and enables access to opportunities that expand WAFAR’s research mission through the development of partnerships and fund-raising.

The Director also engages regularly with the VPR’s office and is responsible for establishing an organizational structure that optimizes WAFAR's ability to fulfill its strategy and visionary aims in accordance with Western best practice and guidelines. The Director strives to inspire research excellence and to implement processes that mobilize and support interdisciplinary research teams.
