"I am a writer by practice but a reader by nature because I am obsessed with learning about other people’s experiences and walking in their shoes! As a fourth-year Honours Biology and English student, I have written so many lab reports and essays that writing has become my sense of purpose - whatever I do with my career, I know I will continue to write and THRIVE in that way!"

Emily Passfield (she/her)

"I’m going into my 4th and final year of my undergraduate psychology degree, and I plan on taking a college program in September 2022. I may be biased, but I have one of the cutest puppies ever and I’m in the process of training him for agility competitions. Around my course schedule and working 3 jobs, I spend my free time at the gym or hanging out with my friends. "

Olivia Piro (she/her)

"I am in the fourth year of my undergrad, completing a degree majoring in MIT and minoring in Women’s Studies. Content creation is a passion of mine, and I feel so lucky to pursue a career in something I love! More importantly, my Western community has truly felt like home for the past three years, so I want to provide a space that encourages my peers to garner the same feeling."

What's one of the best books you've read? Not a huge reader, but I often find myself going back to read excerpts from Tony Robbins’ “Awaken the Giant Within.”

Who is your favourite artist/band or song? It’s too hard to pick a favourite. An all-time favourite song is Perfect Grace by Kwamie Liv.

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? Right now, I would probably go to Denmark to visit my friend who is on exchange there!

Johann Cardenas (he/him)

"I am in my third year completing an Honours Specialization in Bioinformatics. I really enjoy writing for Thrive Online because it gives me a creative outlet, and I can share some of my experiences so other students going through something similar don’t feel so alone."

What's one of the best books you've read? One of the best books I’ve read is When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. There’s something really poignant about how he describes his final moments.

Who is your favourite artist/band? My favourite artist is honestly Kanye West. He’s definitely not my favourite person, but his whole discography is very diverse, and much of it very enjoyable (in my opinion).

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? Tokyo

Maryam Khan (she/her)

"Hi! I’m Maryam, and I am a third-year student in Health Science. The reason why I look forward to being a Digital Peer Leader is because I recognize the importance of reaching out to students across our campus. Writing with the purpose of providing peer support and sharing our perspectives is important to me."

What's one of the best books you've read? This summer I’ve read self-help books. Quite informative!

"I’m a fourth-year student in the medical sciences program doing an honours specialization in IMS. I wanted to be a Digital Peer Leader to step outside of my comfort zone and explore creative writing. Hopefully my blogs are something people can relate to!

What's one of the best books you've read?  Tuesday’s with Morrie (I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in exploring the meanings and values of life, but also love a good memoir).

Who is your favourite artist/band? Arkells + Don’t be a Stranger (fav song) (they are local to my home town – I have been to 5 of their concerts haha).

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? Sicily, Italy would be the dream destination for me!

Clementine Kohlenberg (she/her)

"Hi! My name is Clementine and I’m a third-year student studying psychology. I was a peer leader last year and wanted to continue volunteering as one this year because I love having the opportunity to express my creativity in a way that helps me stay involved in the Western community."

Sam Zhang (he/him)

"Hi, I'm Sam, a third-year student in Medical Sciences doing a Micro Imm specialization. I write on Thrive Online because I heard smart people usually write their ideas down. I'm not particularly smart or have many great ideas, but at least I can write my experiences down so I can share them with you."

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? Venice

Insia Hussain (she/her)

"Hello, I’m Insia. I recently started my third year in the BMOS Program and am also completing a Major in Psychology. I have always enjoyed writing. When I was younger, I wrote more for fun, but nowadays I write mainly for academic purposes. I decided to become a Digital Peer Leader as it would allow me to express myself creatively while sharing my experiences with other Western students."

What's one of the best books you've read? The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Who is your favourite artist/band?  My favourite artists: Ariana Grande, the Weeknd. My favourite songs: Team by Lorde, Let Me Blow Ya Mind by Eve.

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? Seoul, South Korea

Shubh Borad (he/him)

"I am entering the fourth year of my Health Sciences Undergraduate degree this September. As a child, I was neither a strong writer nor had any passion for writing. However, after I discovered the use of it as a tool to express my thoughts and perspectives to others, I had a newfound love and appreciation for writing."

What's one of the best books you've read? I really like The Great Gatsby.

Who is your favourite artist/band?  I like all types of music, but some artists I really like are Snoop Dogg, Kanye, and Magic.

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? Miami or L.A

Tiffany Chu (she/her)

"I’m Tiffany and I am in my fourth year in Medical Science. I joined Thrive Online because I wanted to take a step back from academic writing and give creative writing a shot and share some experiences or thoughts I have!"

What's one of the best books you've read? The Help by Kathryn Stockett primarily because I’ve always been into romance or fantasy-based books but this was one of the first historical fictions I had read and it was extremely engaging and taught me so much about topics I was unfamiliar with.

Who is your favourite artist/band?  I don’t have a favorite band but I’ve been hopping around from Fall Out Boy to Marianas Trench and such. One of my all-time favorite songs is Centuries by Fall Out Boy.

If you could travel to any city in the world, what city would it be? I would really want to visit Taipei just because I heard the food is really good!
