Naomi Klinghoffer

Naomi Klinghoffer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering with an appointment at Western’s Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR). Her research focuses on catalytic and thermochemical conversion of biomass, waste, and CO2 into value-added products.

Dr. Klinghoffer brings to the "nature-inspired solutions" team an expertise in biochar, a material that is gaining attention as a sustainable product that provides a pathway for carbon sequestration. Biochar is created from waste materials such as forestry residues, agricultural residues, or mixed waste (MSW), and its surface is engineered to produce valuable materials such as fertilizers, adsorbents for pollutant removal, and catalysts for the production of renewable natural gas.

Dr. Klinghoffer’s research also focuses on CO2 capture and utilization, including the development of a catalytic membrane reactor for the production of transportation fuels from CO2, the design of a process for CO2-assisted gasification of MSW to produce synthetic fuels, and the development of a hollow fiber membrane contactor for CO2 capture from flue gas.
