Physical Activity is an Effective Treatment for LOTS of Presenting Problems
Whether you’re just feeling down or have a diagnosed mental health condition, research suggests that physical activity could help you with your symptoms.
Vigorous exercise – things like cardio and weight lifting – can be as powerful for positively impacting your mood as an SSRI – a form of medication commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety. Studies also suggest that exercise can have a positive effect on managing ADHD symptoms.
If you have a diagnosed condition, having a balanced and holistic plan of care is essential. For some people, this involves medication and regular appointments with a doctor. For others, it may also involve regular visits to a counsellor or therapist. Both doctors and mental health counsellors are available to Western Students at Health and Wellness at 2170 Thames Hall (the far South entrance to Thames Hall), and you can book an appointment by calling 519-661-3030.
Whatever you need for your mental wellbeing, make sure to include some form of physical activity. Like an appointment with a counsellor or doctor, you do need to schedule it and prioritize it. However, it is low cost, likely more fun, and always available. Why not consider prescribing yourself some enjoyable physical activity to give your mood a boost?
