Research

My research focuses on manuscript poetry and prose of the early seventeent century: my most recent book, The Daring Muse of the Early Stuart Funeral Elegy, concerned the use of the genre for political and satirical purposes. I am also interested in manuscript-based evidence for attribution of authorship and English semantics, particulary of the political sphere in the period 1600 to 1660, and in the rhetoric of manuscript newsletters. I maintain continuing research interests in the poetry of George Herbert.

In addition to teaching sixteenth and seventeenth-century literature, I also teach courses in Poetics, and on the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
