Writing Prize for Young Adult Fiction

One prize at $1,500 or two prizes at $750 each are awarded competitively to full-time students in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities who exhibit a developed talent for creative writing based on a submission of young adult fiction that has not so far been published or won an award in any other competition. Submissions must be made to the Faculty of Arts & Humanities by March 31. The Faculty of Arts & Humanities will select the recipient. This award was established by Kelly Rowan.  

Contest Rules

  1. Entries must be submitted no later than midnight on Monday, March 31, 2025.
  2. Participants must be full-time undergraduate students registered in any program in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at Western University.
  3. Previous winners are not eligible.
  4. Submissions will be handled by a contest organizer who is not a judge.
  5. Entries to be submitted by email in PDF format to: writing@uwo.ca.
  6. Submission must include a separate cover page marked Writing Prize for Young Adult Fiction with the following information:
    • your name
    • student number (NO SPACES)
    • email address
    • permanent mailing address
    • telephone number
    • contest name: Writing Prize for Young Adult Fiction
  7. Include the cover page within the same document/pdf file as the creative work (one file in total to be submitted).
  8. Do not include any personally identifiable information on the creative work itself.
  9. Include the title of the submission on the creative work.
  10. Participants must submit one entry per person (fiction only), which will be adjudicated on the basis of the quality of the writing submitted. Entries may not exceed 5000 words.
  11. If you are submitting a portion of a novel, please include a brief overview of the novel (no more than 150 words). Be sure to identify the portion of the novel you are submitting for consideration (e.g., opening chapter) and, if necessary, indicate what may come after the chapter.
  12. Submissions cannot have been previously published or won an award in any other competition.
  13. The winner will be notified by email by May 30, 2025.
  14. The results will be posted on the Department of English and Writing Studies website and social media channels.
