Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research - 2016

The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research provides a cash award of $35,000 (plus up to $5000 for associated travel and hospitality costs) and supports an annual public forum, broadcast via CBC Radio One's program, "Ideas," to reach the broadest possible audience, and a variety of other speaking engagements.

Nomination

Two nominators are required. Nominators will be Members of the FCIHR or the CAHS in good standing, Scientific Directors of research institutes, or Presidents or Deans of Medicine at Canadian universities. There is no limit on the number of nominations any one party can make.

Nominees will be of international stature and will exemplify the vision, distinguished leadership, and innovative contributions of Dr. Henry G. Friesen and the broad impact he has made in health research and health research policy in Canada. They will be accomplished speakers with the ability to address and engage the broadest possible public audience on topics related to the advancement and contribution of health research to Canadian and international society.

Nominations will be considered for up to three consecutive years, after which a new submission will be required.

Nomination consists of:

  • a completed nomination form
    • signed by the primary and secondary nominators
    • includes an outline of the basis for the nomination (i.e., key information regarding the nominee's career and stature, major contributions to health research, health policy and care, and other distinguishing accomplishments)
  • letters of endorsement from both nominators
  • the CV of the nominee
  • any other printed or electronic material that directly speaks to the nomination

Conditions

  • The Awardee will deliver a one-hour lecture, suitable for national broadcast by CBC Radio One, at a public forum. A manuscript of the lecture will be submitted prior to the event for publication in French and English.
  • The Prizewinner will respond favourably, and without fee (other than expenses), to at least one invitation from an academic or professional institution to present a named lecture within 12 months of the announcement of the Prize. Additional institutional visits are encouraged and supported by a financial supplement to the Prize.
  • The Awardee will address other events scheduled throughout the year, including but not limited to the CAHS Annual Meeting. Manuscripts of remarks will be provided for publication.
