Human Research Ethics

Uphill
Due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19 there may be a delay in the review and approval of recently-submitted applications beyond our documented review timelines. Should this cause concern, please correspond with the appropriate Ethics Officer via WREM correspondence.
The Office of Human Research Ethics is currently working off site and are not available for in-person meetings at this time.  If you need to contact our office, visit our contact us page and we will get back to you as soon as we are able.

For up-to-date information regarding research during COVID-19 or delays in review, please see our communications page.

Important Note: Internet Explorer will no longer support the WREM system as of July 31, 2021.  Please do not use this browser when accessing the WREM system as this will lead to glitches within WREM.

NOTICE: To accommodate Western University’s Holiday Closure any delegated submission received after December 12021 cannot be guaranteed a full review until our return to the office January 2022. Full Board review timelines will still follow listed deadlines. Studies signed-in in January will follow the Delegated Level 2 review guidelines (https://www.uwo.ca/research/ethics/human/deadlines.html).

The Office of Human Research Ethics, on behalf of Western's Research Ethics Boards, manages the approval and monitoring process for the use of humans in research at the university and its affiliated hospitals and research institutes. All research involving humans conducted by faculty, staff or students at Western or its affiliated hospitals or research institutes must be approved by a Western-sanctioned review board.
