Neck and back pain have been leading causes of disability around the world for decades. Today, about 2.4 billion people living with these conditions could benefit from treatment and rehabilitation services – this number has more than doubled since 1990.

There are many challenges to providing the right treatment for the right person at the right time. These include issues of access (location, cost, knowledge, systems) and uncertainty about how biology, psychology, and social context influence the experience of neck and back pain, or the effectiveness of recommended treatments. Developing and delivering better solutions for people experiencing neck and back pain is a priority.

Research Engagement Collaborative Alliance with Partners (RECAP) and the Western Bone and Joint Institute are co-hosting this event on better solutions for neck and back pain, to bring together Western researchers and diverse individual and organization experts from across a variety of communities, industries, governments and not-for-profits. The goal is to share perspectives, find common ground, build connections and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The event will consist of a panel discussion and break-out sessions, as well as a networking lunch.

Our co-chairs for the event are:

  • Alison Rushton, Professor and Director, School of Physical Therapy, Western University; and
  • Dave Walton, Professor, School of Physical Therapy, Western University.

Panelists joining us to share viewpoints from diverse sectors and initiate discussion among all attendees include:

  • Chris Bailey, Orthopaedic Surgeon, London Health Sciences Centre;
  • Marta Francisca Corrà, Product Manager, BTS Bioengineering, Milan, Italy;
  • Sam Desroches, Regional Manager, Rehabilitation Services, CBI Health;
  • Cathie Hofstetter, Patient Advocate;
  • Cheryle Séguin, Professor, Physiology and Pharmacology, Western University; and
  • Soyuth Sok, VP of Health, Fitness and Aquatics, YMCA Southwestern Ontario.

The modules will help establish a common understanding and language related to research partnerships, the roles individuals can play, and ways to overcome power differentials when contributing or learning about multi-sectorial expertise, lived experience, and critical perspectives.

To ensure a successful event, we are seeking to confirm your attendance for the event, as well as committing to going through the learning modules beforehand. Please register by September 10, 2024.
