Intent to Register

If you are planning on returning in September, you  must complete and submit an Intent to Register (ITR) form. By completing an ITR form, you are letting Western University know that you are returning and the program that you plan to take next year. If you don't do this, you won't be able to register for courses.

Most students will be able to complete the ITR process online through your Student Centre website. Students who are unable to complete the ITR process online should create a help ticket through our help portal . You must include first and second choice.

  • Intent to Register for the next academic year available: March 1 to March 31 (April 2 for 2024).
  • To begin the ITR process visit see  step-by-step guide .
  • Don't forget to visit the Academic Calendar for full details on modules offered by Science and Basic Medical Sciences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to complete ITR?

ITR must be completed by:

  • All current first-year students who plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree; students applying to the Honours Specialization in Neuroscience
  • -First-entry Med Sci 2 students
  • -Those wishing to apply to Year 3 BMSc from the competitive pool .

ITR should also be completed by any student who:

  • Wants to add/drop/change a module
  • Wants to transfer to another faculty at Western
  • A graduating student who wishes to return as a Special Student in the fall (or a current graduate who wishes to return as a Special Student)

What's the deadline to complete ITR?

Students have from March 1 to 31 to complete ITR. If you make a mistake or change your mind, you can redo your ITR as many times as you need to prior to March 31 (April 2nd for 2024) at 11:59 p.m.

Failure to complete ITR will result in:

  • First-year students: You will be Undeclared in year 2 and won’t have priority access for modular courses during the registration period
  • Upper-year students: Your ITR choice will be set to “continue in current program.” Your next opportunity to change your module(s) will be next year’s ITR period.

What if I don't know what program I want to enroll in?

If you’re unsure of what you want to enroll in, you should spend time reviewing the Academic Calendar to do some program planning .

If you still have questions, consider attending a dedicated ITR virtual academic advising meeting on the following dates from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.:

  • March 4
  • March 11
  • March 18
  • March 25

Zoom appointment link.  Passcode: 745451

Speak to BMSc and BMSUE department representatives at the annual SSC ITR Event: Wednesday, March 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Physics and Astronomy Atrium.

When will I find out if I was accepted to my module(s) of choice?

Once your final grades for the current academic year are available, you will be adjudicated for your eligibility to enroll in your first-choice module(s). If you don’t qualify for your first choice, you will be assessed for your second choice.

The results will be viewable on Student Center (Academics à Program Status à Grade Report – Progression) by mid-June. This will give you time to plan your timetable prior to fall course registration opening in July.

I’m a fourth-year student and want to return for a fifth year. What are my options?

Graduating students who wish to return to Western in the fall have two options:

  1. Graduate and return as a Special Student: With this option, you will graduate in June (provided you’re eligible) and then return as a Special Student to take additional courses. If you’re returning to increase your average before applying to graduate/professional schools, please check with the programs to which you’re applying to explore their admission policies related to fifth years/Special Students. Note that with this option you may lose priority course access during the summer registration period. If you select this option, you will select Special Student on your ITR (i.e. don’t select “continue in current program). You will also need to apply to graduate, which is a separate process you must complete by April 30.
  2.   Continue in your current program without graduating: This option means you would continue in your current program and wait until you’ve completed the additional courses you plan to take before applying to graduate. In this instance, you will complete an ITR to continue in your current program (you may add additional module(s) if you wish), and you won’t apply to graduate at this time.

BMSc students considering completing a fifth year may wish to watch this video , which features Kathy Boon, BMSUE Coordinator, discussing continuing as a fifth-year student vs. returning as a Special Student.

Is there specific ITR information available for Medical Sciences and/or Neuroscience students?

Yes, Med Sci 2 and BMSc students should refer to the BMSUE ITR page for ITR procedures as well as events.

Students applying to Neuroscience can find FAQs and event information on the Neuroscience ITR page.
