Western at SOUSCC XLVI

Thirty-four (out of 37) of our Chem 4491 undergraduate students and 5 visiting under graduate students from SooChow University participated in the 46th Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference this past weekend. The conference was hosted by Wilfred Laurier’s Chemistry and Biochemistry department. There were more than 190 participants with 100 oral presentations and two dozen poster presentations from over 13 universities.

This voluntary conference was well attended by Western Chem 4491’ers and is an additional component of the scientific communication and professionalism in chemistry component of Chem 4491. The students worked hard, gave great talks, and networked with colleagues from all over Ontario (including Nippissing, Laurentian, Trent, Windsor, Waterloo, Wilfred Laurier, Guelph, York, Queens, Brock, McMaster, U of T (all there campuses), OUIT, and Western!). The conference was supported by the department (paid the registration) and the Western Chem Club (paid for bus transportation). Thanks to them.

A few of our students were highlighted as award winners in the various symposia:

Sydney Legge - 1st Place in Physical, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
Michael Botelho - 3rd Place Organic
Ben Bridge - Honorable Mention Organic
Kyle Classen- Honorable Mention Inorganic and Materials
Baian Almusned - 1st Place Analytical Chemistry
Maya Olechnowicz - 2nd PlacePhysical, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry

We are proud of all the participants. It is a busy time of the school calendar and they had to work extra hard to be ready for this conference.

Please join us in congratulating them on their participation. As always, you can check out our twitter feed(@Westernuchem or @WorkentinChem) to see some of the day’s activities).

Best wishes as the term comes to a close!
