Prof. Martin Stillman won 2026 Gerhard Herzberg Award

Our very own, Prof. Martin Stillman has won the 2026 Gerhard Herzberg Award from the Canadian Society for Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy. He will make a 40-min presentation in the plenary session at the International Conference on Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the morning of June 17th.

Congratulations to all Chem 4491 students who completed their thesis projects! This is our capstone course, and we remain the only department that provides a research experience to all Specialization and Honours Specialization students, and we even let the WISC with Chem join the fun.

Western’s Faculty of Science and Department of Chemistry were well represented at the 54th Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (54th SOUSCC) hosted by the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences at University of Toronto Mississauga on March 21, 2026. The event, which originated at Western in 1973, brings together undergraduate students completing their thesis research projects from universities across the province in a conference format.

A Tribute to Phil Dean, 1943-2025

Phil Dean, a cherished member of Western’s Chemistry Department since 1971, died very suddenly and unexpectedly on Dec. 28, 2025, after a long and distinguished career at Western. He will be sorely missed by his devoted and loving wife Midge, children Mike and Erin, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, along with many faculty and staff in the Chemistry and other Departments at Western.
